The Chosen, Chaim Potok

The Chosen is about two Judaic male childs, one a Orthodox Jew and one a Hasidic Jew, and how different and yet the same their lives are. The Orthodox Jew, Reuven, is the chief character of the narrative. He lives with his male parent and his female parent is dead. Reuven is a really nice male child who is 14 old ages old and aspires to be a Rabbi when he grows up. Daniel the other male child, is the boy of a Hasidic Tzadik ( which is like a Rabbi ) and so when his male parent dies he will hold to take his topographic point even though he wants to be a head-shrinker.

Reuven, like I said before lives entirely with his male parent in their Brooklyn flat. His male parent is a instructor of Judaic jurisprudence, the Talmud, and Teachs at Reuven? s Yeshiva ( school ) . Reuven gets along really good with his male parent and negotiations with him really frequently.

Daniel, on the other manus, lives with his female parent, male parent, sister and small brother. Daniel? s male parent is Tzadik which to Hasidic Jews is like a messen!

ger to god. Daniel? s father ne’er negotiations with him except when learning him the Talmud. this behaviour makes both Daniel and Reuven uncomfortable when they are with him. Daniel is a really bright pupil and has an about photographic memory. He besides has a craving to larn more which turns him against his spiritual religion because he wants to cognize how adult male truly came to be and how adult male thinks.

I admire Daniel because he was brave to stand up to his male parent and the full community and state them that he would non go a Tzadik but that he wanted to go a head-shrinker. I loathe Daniel? s male parent because he is average and non understanding at all.

Reuven and Daniel met while playing an interschool baseball game.

Reuven was fliping and Daniel hit the ball into his which shattered Reuven? s spectacless and sent Reuven to the infirmary for immediate oculus surgery. After Reuven? s oculus heals Daniel went to Reuven to implore his forgiveness and the two male childs became fast friends.

The stor!

Y takes topographic point during universe war two and when the war ends the people of America find out about all the atrocious things that happened because of the Natzis. This of course upsets all the Jews and forced them to take side s about holding Palestine bend into a Judaic fatherland ( this is called Zionism ) . this made Daniel? s father forbid him to talk to Reuven because Reuven? s male parent believes in Zionism and Hasidic? s believe it violates the Torahs of the Torah. But after a mass slaying of Jews in Europe after the war because they still hated the Jews. So the Hasidic stopped detesting the Zionists because they decided that doing Palestine a Judaic fatherland was the lone manner to continue the Judaic civilization.

One of the last struggles in the book is when Daniel decides to state his male parent that he wants to go a head-shrinker non a Rabbi like he? s supposed to go. And this causes a struggle because he wants Reuven to be at that place when he tells his male parent.

I believe that this book is w!

orthy of being named a authoritative because it is highly interesting and good written. I t was fascinatingly existent and the stoping is highly existent and spell-binding. The characters seemed so existent that I felt like I was at that place. The narrative was highly traveling because it helped demo how people interact.
