Death of a Salesman -Character Sketches

In the drama Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, the chief character, Willy Loman, is a fighting salesman. Toward the

terminal of the drama, Willy commits suicide by crashing his auto.

Willy Loman is a complex character who confuses semblance with world. In a manner, Willy has two personalities in this drama.

The one we see in the present action is a tired adult male in his 1960ss. The other Willy is the 1 we see in flashbacks. He is immature

and confident.

In Act Two, Scene Fourteen, Willy s boy Biff tells him that he loves him. Willy can state that Biff is non merely stating this out of

commiseration because Biff is sobbing. In a flashback, Willy speaks to his dead brother Ben. Ben keeps stating Time, William, Time,

reminding him that self-destruction is shuting in. Ben besides tells Willy that he should come to the jungle. In this scene, the jungle represents

chances for success. The ground that Ben tells Willy to come to the jungle, is that when in the jungle, Willy can acquire the

diamonds. The diamonds represent the insurance money that the household will acquire from Willy s accident. Therefore, Ben is stating

that the lone manner Willy can acquire 20 thousand dollars in insurance money is to kill himself, or symbolically Ben is stating that

the lone manner to acquire the diamonds is to come in the jungle. Willy besides talks to Ben how great Biff would make with all of that money.

Willy thinks one more clip about Biff and how he was a great football participant. This shows that Willy still thinks of Biff as a

football hero, which is one of the grounds Willy thinks Biff is so brilliant. As Willy is completing up his ideas, his married woman, Linda,

is naming him to come up to bed. After this happens, the sound of a hurrying auto is heard driving off into the dark. In the same

scene, Willy s married woman Linda has come to do a peace with their two boies, Biff and Happy. Linda besides suspects that Willy may

putting to death himself. She made a large error by go forthing the disturbed Willy entirely. The gum elastic tubing that Linda found on the warmer

foreshadows Willy s self-destruction. Linda doesn T want Willy to kill himself, but believes that she can non interfere with his concern.

I believe that Willy s self-destruction was an flight from shame. He couldn t maintain populating his life as a prevarication. Willy could non confront

world. When people talked to him, he merely heard what he wanted to hear. He was a really distrait and disturbed adult male. After

losing his occupation, he felt he was excessively unsuccessful to travel on life. His rules in life were based on being popular. He believed

that if you were popular, you would be successful. Finally, he faced world and realized that he was non popular. A

combination of his shame and his unpopularity is what killed Willy Loman. He felt like a failure.

From Willy s point of position, the self-destruction was an act of love. He believed that

by killing himself, Biff would be much more

successful. Willy thinks that Biff is brilliant and wants to demo it to him by giving him 20 thousand dollars in insurance

money. A job could originate here because it is non even certain that Willy s self-destruction will be called an accident. If the insurance

company sees it as a self-destruction, Biff will non acquire the money.

clear of any more payments. Biff comes to recognize that Willy had the incorrect dreams. Biff is still traveling to travel out west to carry through

great adult male. He wants to turn out that Willy did non decease in vain. He will warrant Willy s dreams by being director of the shop. It

seems that Happy is about going another Willy.

I believe that Willy s self-destruction was a fearful act. Since he was fired, he felt that he had no ground to populate. It seemed that

the lone thing that mattered to Willy was success and money. When he didn T have either of those things, he did the lone thing

he felt he could make and that was to take his ain life for amount of 20 thousand dollars. Willy did non give much thought as to
