John Steinbeck wrote the book Of Mice & A ; Men in 1937 during the Great Depression. The book is about the lives of two work forces who travel from occupation to occupation working on spreads and farms. These two chief characters are George Milton and Lennie Small. George is a short, little adult male and Lennie is a big, mildly retarded adult male. George looks out for Lennie and in return George gets companionship and protection from Lennie. The other characters in the book ( all on a spread near Soledad ) are Candy, a? swamper? or jack of all trades, Crooks, a black stable vaulting horse, Slim, the jerkline Skinner, Curley, the foreman? s boy, and Curley? s new immature married woman.

Of Mice & A ; Men starts out with George and Lennie walking from the coach halt to the spread where they have a new occupation.
