Introduction

The survey is about distillment. Distillation is a procedure of change overing a liquid to a vapour. and so. roll uping the distillation in another container. This technique is used to separate constituents in a liquid mixture which have different boiling points. or to divide a constituent that is non volatile. It is one of the methods used when sublimating liquids. For illustration. it is used to concentrate alcoholic drinks. The four distillment methods include simple distillment. fractional distillment. vacuity distillment ( distillment at a decreased force per unit area ) . and steam distillment.

The aim of the survey is to distinguish simple from fractional distillment. divide the constituents of the intoxicant drink used. and to cipher the per centum of ethyl alcohol in the drink. Simple and fractional distillment are the methods to be used since it is the most efficient to be used in this experiment. Since the experiment worked merely on the two methods. the other two methods will non be studied.

Methodology

The equipment used are the capacitor. boiling rocks. beaker. thermometer. condensing flask. intoxicant lamp. Fe base. wire gauze. Fe clinch and trial tubings that were calibrated. Vodka is the substance that was distilled. First. the group put up the distillment set up by piecing the instruments. heating the intoxicant lamp. turning the H2O on and so heating the vodka which was contained in the distilling flask with the boiling rocks.

Then the group waited for the first bead of the distillation and so recorded it. After heating and acquiring a batch of distillations. the group stopped when the temperature reached 98 grades Celsius. The group so tested the first and the last bead of the distillation. It was tested by puting it in an vaporizing dish so lighting it with a lucifer. The first bead was proved that it contained ethanol because it was combustible. The last bead nevertheless. was inflammable.

Consequences and Discussions

During the experiment. the group observed that the first bead of the distillation was collected when the thermometer reached 78 grades Celsius. This shows that the volatility of ethyl alcohol is 78 grades Celsius. Distillates were collected every clip the temperature increased by 1 or 2. The group stopped at 98 grades Celsius because if it goes beyond that. H2O. with a volatility of 100 grades Celsius. will besides vaporize.
