In Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen the full novel is designed around a running subject: pride and bias. The transition in the novel that best relates this subject is in chapter thirty-four when Darcy is suggesting to Elizabeth. This chapter is important because it is one of the few times where the characters acknowledge that the exclusive intent of a individual & # 8217 ; s life is to acquire a big wage and a high societal stature.

Throughout the full novel it seems apparent that all the people care about is get marrieding into a higher societal category. And for those who are already affluent and in a comfy place in life, it is imperative that they merely marry person who is equal in category or societal ranking. This is the instance for Darcy and Elizabeth in chapter thirty-four. Darcy knows that by offering his manus in matrimony to Elizabeth he is take downing his criterions in a societal ranking. He is so chesty in his proposal that he even insults Elizabeth. He says, & # 8220 ; It is natural that duty should be felt, and I could experience gratitude, I would now thank you. But I can non – I have ne’er desired your good sentiment, and you have surely bestowed it most unwillingly Could you expect me to joy in the lower status of your connexions? To compliment myself on the hope of dealingss whose status in life is so unquestionably beneath my ain? & # 8221 ; ( Austen, 142-145 ) . Unfortunately for Darcy, Elizabeth merely gets somewhat insulted. Her refusal of Darcy was ab initio because of his intervention of Wickham and his actions toward Jane and Bingley & # 8217 ; s relationship. Elizabeth & # 8217 ; s bias shows in

her actions towards Darcy excessively. She says, ” From the really get downing, from the first minute, I may about state, of my familiarity with you, your manners affecting me with the fullest brief of your haughtiness, your amour propre, and your selfish contempt of the feelings of others, were such as to organize that basis of condemnation on which wining events have built so immoveable a disfavor ; and I had non known you a month before I felt that you were the last adult male in the universe whom I could of all time be prevailed on to marry.” ( Austen, 145 ) . Elizabeth ne’er holds back her feelings toward anyone in the novel. Both Darcy and Elizabeth insult each other to the point where one would ne’er anticipate them to of all time fall in love. They both pre-judged each other early on in the novel and still keep bitterness towards one another. The two have to recognize that the first feelings can be lead oning.

The fresh terminals with Darcy and Elizabeth get the better ofing their bias toward each other, and falling in love. After reading chapter 34 one would ne’er conceive of these two together in love. Both Darcy and Elizabeth pre-judge everyone they come in contact with. The fresh ne’er gives one the feeling of a true love state of affairs. Everyone in this society is out to increase their societal ranking. It is prejudice by the rich people against the hapless people. The good that comes out of this narrative is that both Darcy and Elizabeth overcome their bias and recognize that they have strong feelings for one another. Pre-judging can take one down a long and lonely path if non realized in clip. Fortunately Darcy and Elizabeth met at the terminal of the way.
