During the Age of Reformation people were greatly against the maltreatments that existed in the Roman Catholic Church. A twosome of maltreatments that were greatly stressed were the merchandising of indulgences, barratry, and nepotism. It was some of these same maltreatments that prompted German reformer Martin Luther to compose his 95 Theses. And for the Council of Trent to later turn to them in a series of meetings.

The most criticized maltreatment of the Roman Catholic Church was the merchandising of indulgences by the Catholic Pope. Indulgences permitted people to purchase release from clip in purgatory for both themselves and their deceased loved 1s. They were documents sold in order to convey remittal of penalty due to wickednesss. Another common maltreatment that existed in the Church was barratry. Simony is the act of merchandising of Church places. The Church had permitted of import ecclesiastical stations to be sold to the highest bidders and had left residence demands in the spiritual community unenforced. A last maltreatment of the Church is nepotism. Nepotism is the act of giving occupations to household members alternatively of giving it to more qualified workers. This was a common job where a well-trained and dedicated worker was needed and non merely anyone.

In 1517, when reformer Martin Luther wrote an indictment of the maltreatments of the Roman Catholic Church called the 95 Thesiss, he appealed to many people across Europe. In his indictment he greatly criticized and addressed the merchandising of indulgences above all. At first, a individual would hold to make? work of satisfaction? like fasting, supplication, almsgiving, retreats and pilgrim’s journeies in return for an indulgence. But when the imperium was in demand of money

to contend off the Ottoman Empire and rebuild St. Peter? s in Rome, the Catholic Pope allowed indulgences to be sold for money where he would have half the returns and the other half would travel to funding. This is when Luther was even more enraged by the merchandising of indulgences since he already believed that redemption could non be obtained by adult male? s ain attempt, but more the fact that adult male would be saved merely if God willed it. It was that event that prompted the German monastic to post his thoughts and beliefs as the 95 Thesiss and turn to the maltreatment of selling indulgences in it.

The Council of Trent besides addressed maltreatments that existed in the Church. The Council of Trent was a general council where church functionaries would run into to aggressively specify and reaffirm the philosophies of the Church. During the meetings of the council the maltreatments in the Church were discussed, most significantly simony and nepotism, and were condemned. In Acts of the Apostless of barratry, the hired replacements ( who paid money for their stations ) lived elsewhere, largely in Rome where they frequently performed their jobs automatically and had neither first-hand cognition of nor much understanding with local demands and jobs. This is why people opposed the act of barratry greatly and eventually condemned it. As for nepotism, church functionaries would engage unqualified household members for occupations, where a existent, well-trained professional was needed. This maltreatment of the Church was besides eventually condemned in the Council of Trent.

Either it being addressed by reformers like Martin Luther, or by the Council of Trent, abuses which existed in the Roman Catholic Church were non traveling to travel unnoticed. They had to be corrected and fixed somehow to free the Church of complete corruptness.
