A Trip To Panama City

Day 1:

We arrived at Omar Torrijos airdrome via American Airlines early in the

afternoon. We purchased our needed tourer cards ( 3 balboas, as US dollars are

called in Panama ) at the airdrome, so caught a cab for the 18 stat mi drive to our

downtown hotel. The drive in the beat-up, un-airconditioned auto was instead

expensive ( 30 balboas ) , but the driver spoke English and was really friendly. We

arrived at the hotel and checked in. While my pa was look intoing in I bought a

guidebook in the hotel anteroom and read up on the history of Panama City. The

original metropolis was founded in 1519 by Pedro Arias Davila, known as Pedrarias the

Cruel, because of his obliteration of all but three of the local Indian folk

during his term of office in Panama. Davila used the metropolis as a topographic point to hive away Incan

gold before it was shipped to Spain. The original metropolis was sacked and burned

in 1671 by a group of pirates led by Henry Morgan. The metropolis was rebuilt

within a twelvemonth, this clip on a peninsula 18 stat mis off and surrounded by a

strong wall. This old Spanish metropolis is now the in the in-between business district Panama

City.

Panama City is an international thaw pot and its feeding picks range

from American fast nutrient to excellent internationall culinary art. Eager to get down our

rubber-necking, we grabbed tiffin at a nearby McDonald & # 8217 ; s after look intoing in so

caught a coach. The coachs in Panama are a tourer attractive force in themselves. They

are brilliantly painted, hung with periphery, and have invariably blasting Salsa and

Caracas music playing. They are inexpensive ( 50 cents a drive ) . but are really crowded.

After inquiring several drivers? Donde Virginia este coach? ? we eventually found one traveling

to the Plaza Independencia. This place is the chief square of the colonial town

and is bordered on one side by a cathedral with duplicate female parent of pearl towers that

took 108 old ages to finish. On two other sides it is bordered by the

Archbishop & # 8217 ; s Palace, now a university and the Central Post Office. While in the

old portion of Panama City we besides visited the Iglesia de San Jose and saw the

Golden Aaltar. This communion table was in the original Panama City and was saved from

Henry Morgan & # 8217 ; s plagiarists by a monastic who painted it black to mask it. When we

finished touring we returned to our hotel and so ate dinner at El Pez de Ora,

one of the metropolis & # 8217 ; celebrated seafood eating houses.

Day 2:

We woke early and headed out for a forenoon of shopping at the Mercado

Publico. I bought some jewellery and some little wooden statuettes as keepsakes,

but when I asked? Donde esta los sombreros de Panama? ? , the seller told me

Panama chapeaus were made in Ecuador. The chapeau most normally worn in Panama is the?

pocket bread? , a narrow brimmed st

natural chapeau with black and white chevrons. The most

of import phrases to retrieve when shopping in Panama are? Cuanto cuesta esta? ?

and? Acceptas tarjetas de credita? ? After shopping we had Chinese nutrient in one

of the local eating houses.

After eating we went to see Panama & # 8217 ; s most celebrated attractive force, the

Panama Canal. The Canal was completed in 1914, and is considered one of the

greatest technology efforts in the universe. We took a bird from our hotel to

the canal and so went on a 90 minute train ride all the manner across the isthmus

along the canal. The railway we were going on was built in 1855 to

conveyance? 49ers who were on their manner to the California gold haste and was the

foremost? trans-continental? rail nexus. At one of the train Stationss we got off

and walked to the Miraflores Locks, sat on bleachers, and watched the ships go

through the canal. After our circuit of the Panama Canal we returned to our hotel

to acquire ready for a dark of dinner and theatre. We ate dinner at an Italian

eating house so went to the Teatro National for a public presentation of the Folkloric

Ballet. The Folkloric Ballet features native common people dances and costumes and was

really entertaining.

Day 3:

We rented a auto and left Panama City headed southwest along the Pan

American Highway. First we visited the Parque Natural Metropolitana, a menagerie on

the outskirts of Panama with monkeys, cervid, sloths, and iguanas. We so drove

toward El Valle, approximately 75 stat mis off. El Valle is located in the centre of a

hibernating vent. There we saw hot springs, botanical gardens ( with square trees

which scientists have been unable to explicate! ) , and aureate toads found nowhere

else on Earth. We continued down the main road go throughing through the towns of

Penonome, the geographic centre of Panama, and Nata, on of the oldest towns in

Latin America. The Interior of Panama is largely farmland and grazing land for

cowss. We even saw some cowpuncher! At dark we arrived at Baquette, a small town

on the side of the hibernating Baru Volcano, where we spent the dark.

Day 4:

We began our twenty-four hours by sing Volcan Baru National Park and taking a

short hiking to see the beautiful workss and birds. The vent is the highest

point in Panama at 3475 metres. After our hiking we ate tiffin and so drove to

Chiriqui Grande where we dropped off our auto. We so caught a ferry to Bocas

del Toro where we visited Bastimentos National Park. The park has pristine white

sand beaches where sea turtles nest. The coral reefs off the seashore are place to

more than 200 species of tropical fish. While there we besides got to see caves

incorporating the largest population of fruit eating chiropterans in the universe! Later we

went snorkel diving of the seashore of Almirante Island where we spent the dark.
