Some of the most lastingly delicious children’s books in English are “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking-Glass” . Here are what Albert Baugh write about them in “A Literary History of England” :

“Written by an bizarre Oxford Don to divert his small girlfriends. these two world-famous books are the best of all commemorations of the Victorian love of bunk. In them are elements of sarcasm and lampoon which connect them with a long tradition. but they shot through with a quality distorted logic ( for their writer was a professional mathematician and logistician ) which is inimitable and alone. ”

A narrative may be told either by one of the characters. or by an external storyteller. To specify by whom the narrative is made is to specify the point of position that the writer has chosen for his narrative.

In “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” the storyteller does non present himself as a character. Lewis Carroll uses 3rd individual narrative. Yet. everything in the narrative is seen. heard or idea happens which she can non feel. or in topographic points where she is non present. This sort of point of position is called selective omniscience. that is the writer knows everything. but merely through one character’s consciousness. One of Carroll’s favorite devices is the wordplay ( play upon words ) that is the humourous usage of the same word in more than one sense. or of two different words likewise pronounced. For case “Mine is a long narrative! ” said the Mouse. “It is a long tail. certainly” . said Alice. looking down with admiration at the Mouse’s tail.
