Becket is a film that portrays the struggle of power between the throne and the church. It is the narrative of Henry II and his comrade Thomas Becket. The film begins by giving a brief sum-up of the history up to the point where the film begins. This information is important to the apprehension of the state of affairs. William the Conqueror and his Norman military personnel defeated the Saxons at the Battle of Hastings. William? s great grandson, Henry II, continues to govern over the Saxon provincials. This enlightening film begins with Henry II kneeling at Becket? s grave remembering what happened between the two. The film so flashes back to the beginning.
Becket was Henry? s right manus adult male. Henry ever had jobs with the church over who had more power. When the Archbishop of Canterbury passed on, Henry decided to name Becket as the new Archbishop. In Henry? s eyes, Becket would hold with anything Henry said ; Thursday
us, this would stop the competition of the church with his power. Although Becket was merely a church deacon, Henry figured his determination was superb. Henry so decided he wanted Gwendolyn, Becket? s one true love. Gwendolyn, who was genuinely in love with Becket, despised this determination and killed herself. This action was one that Becket would ne’er forgive Henry for.
Henry was finally surprised when Becket began to take his occupation as the Archbishop of Canterbury really earnestly. Becket fought for power for the church and went against the word of Henry. Becket gave Henry the best battle since the licking of the Saxons. In the terminal, Henry? s barons killed Becket. Henry accepted to have ciliums for the decease of Becket to quiet the disquieted Saxons. Henry received these ciliums kneeling in forepart of Becket? s grave. This film clearly illustrated the battle of power between the throne and the church. Henry? s unjust determination of naming Becket as the Archbishop led to the addition of power for the church.
