Rescue

A true subsister can merely depend on himself. The fresh Deliverance is a narrative

about four characters each with different positions on lasting. Every adult male in the

universe can associate to one of the three secondary characters in the novel

Rescue. Work force can associate to Lewis Medlock for his crude positions, Drew for

his reason, or Bobby for his deficiency of ability to last. Many people say

that Lewis is the adult male that most work forces want to be like, Drew is the adult male that most

work forces are like, and Bobby is the adult male that most work forces fear going. Lewis is the

adult male most work forces want to be because he does non depend on anyone or anything. He

loves a challenge and will make anything he can to populate life to its fullest extent.

Ed Gentry, the cardinal character, represents all in the manner he looks up to

Lewis and strives to be like him. Most work forces fall into the same class as Drew

because their ability to last has been clouded by rational ideas. Then

there is Bobby. Most work forces do non desire to be linked with Bobby because he can non

live without aid from civilisation. Even though these characters posses many

of the same traits, their chief differences are in their ability to last life.

They besides have different positions on life. Lewis sees life as a game that you must

invariably challenge if you are to last. Drew sees life as a battle that

should ne’er be challenged. Then there is Bobby who sees life as something he

does non hold to worry approximately because their will ever be person their to assist

him through it. All three of these characters possess traits that can be

identified in every adult male.

First there is Lewis, a in-between aged adult male that is at the prime of his life, and

frights nil. He is the strongest character in the book. He is, & # 8220 ; ? a

physical-conditioning perfectionist with misplaces survival-of-the-fittest

inherent aptitudes and cave-man longings & # 8221 ; ( Warren ) . Lewis is the adult male that most work forces want

to be like because he needs no 1 to last but himself. He invariably

demonstrates a crude life style that no longer exists. The crude life-

manner he demonstrates is one of endurance. Lewis is an attractive character for

males because of his demand for no 1. He needs no 1 to life his life for him.

He knows that the lone manner to to the full bask life is to take opportunities. He besides

feels that live is a game that you must constantly play or you will decease ( Graham ) .

Because he sees life in this mode he believes that he must invariably

challenge himself merely to do certain he is self sufficient. & # 8220 ; He & # 8217 ; s nuts about

roughing it & # 8221 ; ( Warren ) . Even though Lewis has a strong ability to last

whatever life might convey upon him, he is non unsighted to the fact that he can

still be hurt even with aid from others. This is most apparent when he says,

& # 8220 ; But I believe in endurance. All sorts. Every clip I come up here, I believe

in it more. You know, with all this alleged modern comfortss, a adult male can

still fall down & # 8221 ; ( 50 ) . Lewis does non believe it is right for adult male to allow

machines take our independency off from us. He believes that it will be better

if we all began to depend on ourselves alternatively of others. Lewis is the lone

true subsister out of the characters.

Next there is Drew, the adult male that most work forces are like. Drew is a rational adult male that

has merely begun to lose his ability to last. Drew unlike Lewis does non see

life as a game, but alternatively as a battle that will go through you by every bit long as you

to make non interfere. He is a normal adult male with a lovely household, a delightful

suburban house, and a good occupation. Drew is frequently seen as a self-made-man that has

been populating in the metropolis excessively long and has forgotten how to be independent. He

has spent so much of his clip utilizing rational idea that he can no longer utilize

his crude endurance accomplishments. This is most apparent after

they kill the first

mountain adult male. Drew says, & # 8220 ; Put the organic structure in one of the canoes and take it down to

Aintry and turn it over to the main road patrol & # 8221 ; ( 121 ) . Drew believe that they

should travel to the constabulary, and depend on them to make the right thing ; nevertheless, the

others know that if they do that they will all be faced with slaying charges, and

might travel to imprison. Drew can non believe that they want to conceal the organic structure from the

constabulary because it is non the rational thing to make. This scene shows Drew & # 8217 ; s

inability to be independent. He represents the first phases of adult male & # 8217 ; s loss of

his ability to last. At the beginning of the book Ed & # 8217 ; s endurance accomplishments

resemble Drew & # 8217 ; s inability to last. However, because of Ed & # 8217 ; s tests and

trials he takes a different way, and by the terminal of the book is wholly

independent. Drew represents a bulk of the population because he lets his

rational ideas overcast his ability to last.

Finally there is Bobby, who represents the adult male we all fright of going. Bobby

is wholly dependent on other people and machines. Without either he would

non be able to last. Bobby, unlike Lewis and Drew, sees life without any

dangers, and because he does non see the dangers he walks blindly through life.

He has a weak head and is easy persuaded. He is unlike Drew and Lewis in the

fact that he has ne’er been forced to depend merely upon himself. During his

full life he has had person to take attention of him. The scene after they find

Drew & # 8217 ; s organic structure shows Bobby & # 8217 ; s inability to last. After seeing Drew & # 8217 ; s organic structure, Bobby

began to conceal his caput, and loses control of his head. Bobby represents the

hereafter of world. He represents a adult male of the hereafter that has become so

dependant on other people and machines that he can no longer map. Ever

clip he is faced with a quandary he turns to either Ed or to Lewis for the reply.

When Lewis breaks his leg and either Bobby or Lewis must mount the drop to

kill the 2nd mountain adult male, Bobby is the first to allow Ed cognize that he can non

make it because, & # 8220 ; I can & # 8217 ; t even shoot a bow & # 8221 ; ( 155 ) . This fearful place, once more,

shows Bobby & # 8217 ; s dependance upon others. Bobby is the adult male most work forces fear going

because he is unable to depend on himself therefore he is unable to last. If

Ed had non been delivered on the river so there is a opportunity that he would hold

ended up like Bobby.

In decision, every adult male can be linked to one of the characters in the book. To

Ed, Lewis seems to be a ace homo being that is non afraid of anything. He

will dispute anything or anybody to turn out he can last. Drew is the most

rational adult male and the adult male that most work forces can associate to. In the beginning of the

fresh Ed did non cognize how he felt about Drew, but by the terminal of the book he

realized that Drew was, & # 8220 ; The lone nice one ; the lone sane one & # 8221 ; ( 220 ) . Finally

there is Bobby, who Ed sees as a friend at the beginning of the trip, but by the

terminal he has seen that Bobby is incapacitated. It is dry that the lone 1 who

walked off from the escapade without any physical lesions is Bobby. This could

be due to the fact that he depended on other people to take attention of him and in

the procedure they got hurt. These four work forces went down the river to prove their

endurance accomplishment, and, & # 8220 ; ? to interrupt the ho-hum-ness of their suburbanite weekends

by taking a canoe trip down a unsafe river. & # 8221 ; The book rescue is about

a prophesy of things to come if adult male does non halt trusting on other people so

much.
