the & # 8220 ; War between the States & # 8221 ; has become
known as the bloodiest war of all time fought. The Civil War divided the United States
between its Northern and Southern provinces. The conflicts lingered for long old ages, but the
effects of the war have endured clip. The start of the war began with the fire on
Ft. Sumter by the Southern provinces and lasted until General Robert E Lee surrendered his
southern military personnels at Appomattox Court House in Virginia on April 9, 1865. The War
pitted brother against brother in efforts to retain a manner of life and thought. Although
at that place has non been understanding on the major causes of the War, this essay will research
possible immediate causes and long term causes of the War. The immediate causes of
the war that will be discussed are the election of Lincoln as president, the quest of the
South to win from the Union, and the fire on Fort Sumter. The longer term causes
discussed will be economic differences between the North and South, failure of Congress
to compromise and the bondage and district issues.
The immediate causes of the War were the election of Lincoln as president. The
firemans threatened sezession because of Lincoln & # 8217 ; s association with emancipationist. The
Southern provinces wanted their independency respected by the national authorities. The
saving of the manner of life in the Southern provinces was of extreme importance. In
resistance to statute law that would beef up the national authorities the Confederate states
rejected the demands of the Union. The Southern provinces believed that the right to win
from the Union was within the philosophy of provinces & # 8217 ; rights. Secessionist believed that the
national authorities was a conglobation of autonomous provinces and that any province had the
legal right to take itself from the Union. As Lincoln gave his inaugural address he
declared that sezession was illegal and that he would get Southern ownerships. One
of these Southern holds would be Fort Sumter, which is located in the bosom of the South.
On April 12, the Confederacy fired upon Sumter to capture better place to support
initiated the conflict that would climax into the bloodiest War of all time.
The economic climes of the North and South differed a great trade. The North & # 8217 ; s
economic system depended to a great extent upon industry. The South was based on an agricultural
economic system, which produced such hard currency harvests as baccy, cotton,
and sugar would endure
great adversities. Secession was cardinal to the endurance of the South and its manner of life.
Without sezession the South would hold to confront an economic system without its inexpensive resource,
slave labour. Southerners felt that bondage should be the foundation of their society and it
was more of a necessity than an evil. With enlargement confronting Congress, the issue of
bondage played a cardinal function in the division of the Union. Anti-slavery advocators demanded
that bondage be left out of the new districts.
Legislation was continuously introduced into Congress that would restrict the span
of slave labour, nevertheless the South responded by saying that could non be prohibited from
any land that was in the Union. The slavery issue was a changeless in statute law with
Congress, assorted via medias attempted to settle the issue but with no solution.
Popular-sovereignty was a compromised that would hold allowed the district itself to
set up the Torahs on bondage, but proved damaging to the cause of the Anti-slavery
militant because it allowed bondage in provinces that had antecedently determined it to be illegal.
In order for the issue to be resolved and to maintain the Southern provinces from splintering the
Union a via media needed to be reached. Of the via medias submitted to the
national authorities, the Crittenden Compromise was the most popular. The Crittenden
Compromise attempted to protect the system of bondage by set uping amendments that
would restrict the national authoritiess ability to get rid of it. This Compromise was non
successful because of Lincoln & # 8217 ; s strong base against the establishment of bondage. The failure
to compromise between Congress lead to farther division amongst the States.
The actions of the North and the South and their failure to compromise lead to the
most dearly-won war in human casualties of all time. The devastation of the South & # 8217 ; s manner of life and
a new Union were the direct consequences of war. The eventual prostration of bondage and the sum
prostration of the South & # 8217 ; s economic system, along with Lincoln & # 8217 ; s leading brought forth a new
state and economic construction. This new construction brought duties prefering for
fabrication, free homesteads, and cardinal banking, and railroads for everyone. The
division of the provinces has long been felt with the heritage of hatred that remained
following the war. The War was the beginning and stoping of a manner of life for all, and
the beginning of an enlargement epoch of the United States.
