The Negative Effectss of Colonization

When Christopher Columbus crossed the Atlantic, looking for a new path to the East, he found a New World. In this New World he found a new and unusual people. The landscape was different, the clime was different and the natural resources were different. After returning back to Spain and describing this New World, the European colonialism was started. Peoples from many of the European states came to what would be called the Americas and laid their claim to the land. Each state conveying their positions and civilizations and set uping it in the country that they claimed. This colonialism continued throughout history into the twentieth century. Africa and Southeast Asia were colonized, by the U.S. and assorted other European states, and used as battlefields for the U.S. and the Soviet Union to contend their cold war. These wars resulted in the deceases of many soldiers but even more African and Asiatic people, whose places were displaced and state lacerate apart. The affects of this colonialism can still be seen thought these states in today s times. Robert A. Heinlein, C.S. Lewis and Ray Bradbury trade with the issue of colonialism in the books, The Puppet Masters, Out of the Silent Planet and The Martian Chronicles, severally. Each of these narratives deal with colonisation of Earth and of other universes and the affects that colonisation has on the dwellers of the universes. The Puppet Masters, Out of the Silent Planet, and The Martian Chronicles, trade with the negative affects of colonialism on the population that is colonized every bit good as the negative affect on the population that colonizes.

In Heinlein s The Puppet Masters, a race of animals, that survive by come ining another organic structure and populating off of it, come to earth from the planet Titan. These animals wanted to colonise Earth and used its natural resources, people, much like the early colonialist of the Americas, who wanted Tobacco and sugar. The Titans started their colonisation easy by detecting the worlds and directing little Numberss of Titans to earth ab initio to reconnoiter the worlds. We have studied you and we know your ways. ( 101 ) This is like the early expeditions to America when little groups of people arrived. The Titans besides have an haughtiness that the Europeans settees had. When the old adult male asked Sam with the Titan on his back what planet they were from, and he replied, All planets are ours. This attitude is the same as the early colonists who believed that the land they claimed belonged to them despite the fact there were already people populating at that place. The Titans seem to believe that they have a right to travel to any planet and name it at that place ain. Sort of a manifest fate of the development of the West in North America. The Titans besides had some missional type values. The Europeans felt that the Indians were pagans and that they should be converted to Christianity. They felt that is was their responsibility to change over the barbarians and convey peace and order to their lives. When the Old Man asked the Titan possessed Sam why they were here, he replied, To convey you peace and contentment-and the joy of of resignation. ( 101 ) The Titans believed that worlds were barbarous and wanted war. If the Titans converted the worlds, they would hold peace and would no longer hold the desire for war. This colonisation by the Titans seemed like and invasion from the point of position of the worlds, much like the Indians would hold thought of the Europeans coming to America.

Bradbury s The Martians Chronicles shows the history from get downing to stop of colonisation. It starts out the same as most colonisation with a little expedition that fails which leads to another with more work forces, which fails and this continues for four expeditions. The last one succeeds and that leads to the start of the colonisation of Mars. Spender, a member of the last expedition, wanted to halt the colonisation of Mars because he knew the negative effects that it would do.

When I was a child my folks took me to see Mexico City. I ll ever retrieve the manner my male parent acted-loud and large. And my female parent didn T like the people because they were dark and didn T wash sufficiency. And my sister wouldn T talk to most of them. And I can see my female parent and my male parent moving the same manner here. ( 64 )

This attitude toward is common with colonialist who look down on people for now holding the same engineerings or manner of life. Spender goes on to state, Do you retrieve what happened to Mexico when Cortez and his really all right good friends arrived from Spain? A whole civilisation destroyed. Spend

Er realizes that colonisation is so bad, that he is willing to kill his ain crewmembers to maintain adult male from coming to Mars. As the colonists from Earth moved in, the Martians were moved further off from their metropoliss and into concealment in the forests. This parallels what happens to the Indians when the Europeans arrived and the Indians on the East Coast were driven further west. The Martians were besides killed off by disease the same as the Indians. The Indian population was decimated by disease. That is another affect of colonisation, no opposition to diseases. After the Martians have gone off and it is merely the colonists, life on Mars becomes similar to life on Earth. The ways and attitudes of the tellurians were brought to Mars merely like they were when the Europeans came to America.

In Lewis Out of the Silent Planet adult male is tempted in looking at another universe to research and run out of resources. Although Weston claimed to be interested in going to the Moon for scientific grounds, Devine openly admits to traveling to the Moon for personal addition. For the most portion is conversation ran on the things he would make when he got back to Earth: ocean traveling yachts, the most expensive adult females and a large topographic point on the Riviera figured mostly in his programs. I am non running all these hazard for merriment. Devine knew about the gold on the planet and taking it was his lone concern. When his life was being decided by the Oyarsa, alternatively of merely pleading for his life he says, We little people merely want sun-bloods. You give us plenty Sun bloods, we go back into sky, you ne’er see us no more. ( 134 ) Even when his life was about to be taken off from him, all he could believe about was the gold. Economic grounds where the ground Columbus trip was financed by Spain and some of the first colonists were apprenticed retainers to work on farms to convey goods back to the state from which they came. The worlds brought nil but force to a planet that had no war or contending between the groups that were on the planet. Weston ended up killing Ransom new friend all for grounds of greed and haughtiness that didn t exist on Malachandra. Ransom tells the Oyarsa, Your tribal life with its rock age arms and bee-hive huts, is crude coracles and simple societal construction, has nil to compare with our civilization- with our scientific discipline, medical specialty and jurisprudence. Our right to supplant you is the right of the higher over the lower. ( 135 ) That statement made by Ransom embodies all that colonialism is. The belief in high quality of one group of people over another and the one group has the right to utilize whatever it wants because of that belief.

Colonialism has had really negative effects on the colonised people though out history. War and disease, fundamentally wiped out Indians in the Americas. In Africa, contending still goes on between groups that were divided against each other by their colonial powers. Vietnam was torn apart by a decennary of war because of two colonial powers utilizing them to contend a cold war. The negative affects of colonialism give form to the three novels. Each writer uses the characters to demo how colonialism causes heartache to those being colonized. In The Puppet Masters, Heinlein shows that people don t want to be colonized even if it could look to be good through engineering or other benefits. Sam says, I was curiously contented to be back with my maestro. Even though he was pleased with holding no concern and emphasis in his life, he finally valued his freedom more than the benefits the being brought him. The Martian Chronicles parallel the colonisation of America and what happened to the native people. Disease destroyed the Martians, go forthing a few left in the universe that were run of into the mountains. Much like the Indians, being placed on the reserves in some far off out of the manner topographic point. The isolated Martian who became Tom Lafarge, was an analogy of how colonists feel it is a right of theirs to make whatever or take whatever from the indigens. He was torn apart by the people who all felt that they had a right to maintain him. Never did anyone see what the Martian wanted to make. Lewis Out of the Silent Planet, show human haughtiness about colonising inferior existences. Even though the Oyarsa posses more cognition and power than Weston, Weston negotiations to him as if he is a kid. Weston says that he, bear [ s ] the on my shoulders the fate of the human race. ( 135 ) This idealology of the White Man s Burden is the driving force behind colonisation that causes bitterness with the native people. The terminal consequence is that the relationship between the two peoples will ever be unequal, doing it impossible for the two groups to co-exist together.
