History of Organized Crime
For my study I choose the subject organized offense. I thing organized offense is
a large portion of this worlds life and economic system. The universe can non populate with it and
can non populate with out it. For my study I am traveling to compose about the history of the
Mafia, and call some of the major offense households.
Throughout history, offense has existed in many different signifiers and has
been committed by non lone persons, but by groups every bit good. Crime is something
that knows no boundries ; it exists in all civilizations, is committed by all races, and has
existed in all clip periods. Crime exists as a portion of the economic establishment and is
a life style for many people. Crime besides exists in both organized and un organized
signifiers. Since the early 1900 & # 8217 ; s, & # 8220 ; organized & # 8221 ; offense has existed in the United States.
The followers will demo where, when, and why the Mafia came to the United
States, who organized it in the United States, and how it differed from its beginnings in
the European Mafia.
In the 9th century, Sicily was occupied by Arab forces. The native
Sicilians were oppressed and took safety in the surrounding hills. The Sicilians
formed a secret society to unify the indigens against the Arab and Norman encroachers.
This secret society was called Mafia after the Arabic word for safety. The society & # 8217 ; s
purposes were to make a sense of household based on lineage and Sicilian heritage.
In the 1700 & # 8217 ; s, images of a black manus were distributed to the wealthy. This was an
mute petition for an sum of money in return for protection. If the money
wasn & # 8217 ; T paid, the receivers could anticipate force such as snatchs, bombardments,
and slaying. By the 19th century, this society grew larger and more
reprehensively oriented. In 1876, Mafia Don Rafael Palizzolo, ran for political office in
Sicily. He forced the electors to vote for him under gunpoint. After being elected
into office, he promoted Mafia Don Crispi as Prime Minister. Together the two put
Sicily under authorities control and funnelled authorities financess to the society
known as the Mafia.
In the 1800 & # 8217 ; s, New Orleans was the largest Mafia site in the United States. It
was while look intoing the slaying of an Italian immigrant that the current Police
Chief, David Hennessey discovered the being of this secret society. Police
Chief Hennessey was assassinated before this slaying instance could travel to test.
Twelve work forces were charged with this blackwash but were lynched by a freshly
formed vigilante group. The Italian Ambassador demanded that the vigilance mans be
tried. President Harrison who disproved of the vigilance mans and gave a big hard currency
colony to the households of the lynched work forces. This was a widely publicized instance
because of its & # 8217 ; foreign branchings and the engagement of the President of the
United States. Don Vito, Vito Cascio Ferro, was the first Sicilian Capo de Tutti
Capi. He fled to the United States in 1901 to get away apprehension and formed a group of
the Black Hand. Its & # 8217 ; members were hardened felons presently fugitives from
Sicily. He is known as the Father of the American Mafia. In 1924, Mussolini was
determined to free Italy of the Mafia so many members fled to the United States to
avoid persecution. This increased the Numberss of members in the organisation.
These flying Italians were good cognizant there was money to be made in the
United States through extortion, harlotry, chancing and bootlegging. Every
big metropolis shortly had its ain Mafia chapter. Prohibition which was a legal prohibition on
the maker and sale of elating drinks generated a moving ridge of illegal
activity since there was large money to be made. During this clip, mobsters openly
flaunted their wealth and power. This period established many immature work forces as
leaders in the New Age American Mafia.
Charles Luciano, born in 1897 in Sicily, came to New York in 1906. He
trained in the Five Points Gang, a Mafia crew, under John Torrio. In this pack, he
became friends with Al Capone and other outstanding mobsters. Luciano started his
ain harlotry racket in the early 1920 & # 8217 ; s and was in entire control of harlotry
in Manhattan by 1925. In 1929 he was kidnapped, beaten and stabbed independently
with an ice pick. He miraculously survived but maintained & # 8220 ; omerta & # 8221 ; , which is a
vow ne’er to uncover any Mafia secrets or members under punishment of decease or
anguish. By 1935, Luciano was known as The Boss of Bosses. He had antecedently
established Murder Inc. with Bugsy Siegel and Myer Lansky, two other good
known mobsters. Luciano & # 8217 ; s broad spread condemnable activities led to his being
investigated by District Attorney Thomas E. Dewey. He was finally sentenced
to thirty to fifty old ages for extortion and harlotry. Luciano was considered to be
a powerful Mafia member with strong ties to Sicily. After his strong belief, the
United States authorities approached him with a trade. In exchange for his
aid in the Allied invasion of Sicily, he was offered exile to Rome.
Luciano contacted his Mafia associates in Italy and the trade was made. Luciano
died of a bosom onslaught in 1962 while run intoing an American film manufacturer to make his
life narrative.
Myer Lansky was ne’er an initiated member of the Mafia since he was non
Italian. Lansky became a close associate of Luciano after his rise to power and
influence among the Judaic mobsters, known as Myer & # 8217 ; s rabble. His forte was
gaming. He formed Murder Inc. which was a group of specialized contract slayers
which was hired out to other rabble. Lansky was instrumental in working out the
trade with the authorities for Luciano in the Allied invasion. While Luciano was in
gaol and subsequently deported to Italy, he entrusted the running of the offense mob to
Lansky. By the 1960 & # 8217 ; s, Lansky & # 8217 ; s chancing operations extended half manner around the
Earth with sections all over South America and every bit far as Hong Kong. In 1970,
the federal authorities was be aftering to bear down La
nsky with revenue enhancement equivocation, so he fled
to Israel. In Tel Aviv, the Israeli authorities under force per unit area by the U.S. revoked
his visa and Lansky was forced to stand test. He avoided strong belief because of his
high degree authorities contacts and retired to Miami, Florida and died in 1983. At
the clip of his decease, his estate was valued at 4 million dollars.
The 3rd member of Murder Inc. was Benjamin ( Bugsy ) Siegel. He was
born in Brooklyn, NY in 1906. While still a adolescent, he met Myer Lansky and
went on to organize the Bug and Myer Mob which specialized in gaming and auto
larceny. In the 1930 & # 8217 ; s, this rabble joined with Luciano and formed Murder Inc. Siegel
finally killed Joe. & # 8220 ; The Boss & # 8221 ; , Masseria which ended the present rabble wars at
that clip. Siegel continued to transport out slayings for Luciano and by 1937 there was
a big figure of contracts out of Siegel & # 8217 ; s life since he had angered so many of the
foremans. To protect him, Lansky and Luciano persuaded him to travel out to
California. In California, Siegel he was the chief adult male in the Luciano and Lansky
pack and extorted money from film studio proprietors. He continued to make slayings
for Luciano. Siegel & # 8221 ; borrowed & # 8221 ; five million dollars of mob money to construct
the first ace casino/hotel in Las Vegas. The Flamingo hotel turned out to be a
debacle and lost money. Luciano demanded refund of the financess and Siegel
refused, believing he was every bit powerful as Luciano. Luciano ordered his decease.
Although Siegel was warned by Lansky of this program, he continued to decline to
refund the money. On June 20, 1947 he was killed.
Dutch Schultz, was another major participant in organized offense He opened a
barroom in the Bronx, New York during prohibition and organized a group of hoods
to spread out his bootlegging operations. His imperium shortly grew to big proportions
with many illegal constitutions in the Bronx and Manhattan. During his test for
revenue enhancement equivocation, many of his rackets were taken over by Luciano, who expected
Schultz to be convicted. Although this prompted him to travel his operation to New
Jersey, Schultz was still considered so influential Luciano asked him to be a
member of the Board of Directors of the offense mob. The District Attorney of
New York, Thomas E. Dewey was non finished with Schultz though and continued
look intoing his activities. Schultz decided it was in his best involvement to extinguish
Dewey but the offense mob disagreed. They feared the violent death of a District
Attorney would merely add to their jobs but Schultz would non drop his program. On
the eventide of October 23, 1935, while Schultz was informing his New Jersey
associates of his program, a Murder Inc. hit adult male assassinated all of them, Schultz
included. He died subsequently that flushing in a Newark City infirmary.
Alphonse & # 8220 ; Scarface & # 8221 ; Capone was another organiser of the early American
Mafia. He was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1899. His engagement with
organized offense began when he was eleven old ages old. As he got older, he
graduated to the more powerful & # 8220 ; Five Pointers Gang & # 8221 ; where he became acquainted
with Luciano. When Johnny Torrio, the original leader of the & # 8220 ; Five Pointers Gang & # 8221 ;
moved to Chicago, he invited Capone to be his buddy. Torrio & # 8217 ; s uncle, & # 8220 ; Big Jim & # 8221 ;
Colisimo was the offense foreman in Chicago. Trouble between uncle and nephew
started and Capone was hired to kill the uncle go forthing Torrio in charge of all
Chicago. In 1925 when Torrio was independently wounded in a shoot out, he gave
Capone his vast concern imperium, valued at 50 million dollars a twelvemonth. During this
clip, Capone fell out of favour with other Mafia mobsters and several efforts
were made on his life. Capone took retaliation by presenting the ill-famed St.
Valentine & # 8217 ; s Day slaughter in which he killed several of his enemies stoping
opposition to his go oning concern traffics. He was eventually sentenced for revenue enhancement
equivocation and spent most of his 11 twelvemonth sentence in Alcatraz. In 1939 he was
released from prison because he was in the advanced phases of pox. He died of
this disease in 1947.
At the bend of the century the American Mafia was different from the
Sicilian Mafia in a figure of ways. The European Mafia was founded on a sense
of trueness and regard for civilization, household and the Sicilian heritage. The Mafia was
to protect its & # 8217 ; members involvements and allow them freedom in concern in exchange
for absolute trueness and entry to the & # 8220 ; household & # 8221 ; . The Sicilian Mafia was based
on the belief that justness, award and retribution are for a adult male to take attention of, non for
a authorities to take attention of. The Sicilian Mafia valued the codification of & # 8220 ; omerta & # 8221 ; , the
codification of award and silence and purely adhered to the opinion that this was a secret
society, unfastened merely to those who shared Sicilian blood. In contrast to the baronial
Sicilian Mafia, the American Mafia has proved to be a conniving, cold hearted
organisation. The American Mafia consists of a big group of canonized stealers,
cutpurses and liquidators. Although it began with the acceptance of much of the
Sicilian heritage it has evolved into an organisation that & # 8217 ; s sole intent is to do
money utilizing any illegal agencies possible. The members of the American Mafia usage
extortion, bootlegging, harlotry, gaming, snatch, and slaying to accomplish
their terminals.
The Mafia has continued to turn and overrun our society from the early
1900 & # 8217 ; s. It continues to work and destruct the honest citizens of our state. Now,
these condemnable organisations non merely command the grownups of our communities but
hold begun, through the sale and distribution of narcotics, to command our kids.
Crime organisations must be stopped nevertheless this is a hard undertaking. They have
infiltrated members of our authorities and jurisprudence enforcement bureaus with the enticement
of money. Unfortunately offense does pay in many cases. It is up to each of us to
non look the other manner, but be cognizant that their are truly no victimless crimes. One
manner or another, we all pay either by higher revenue enhancements or by a more violent society.
