“ A cat goes nuts if he ain & # 8217 ; t got cipher. Don & # 8217 ; t affair no difference who the
cat is, long & # 8217 ; s he & # 8217 ; s with you. I tell ya a guy gets excessively lonely an & # 8217 ; he gets
sick. ” A major subject in Steinbeck & # 8217 ; s novel Of Mice and Men is solitariness.
The characters Crooks, Candy, and Curley & # 8217 ; s married woman, each suffer from this although
the badness of their privacy varied. The old swamper, Candy is victimized by
isolation as a consequence of two chief factors, one being his disablement and the
other being his age. For illustration, throughout the book we find the fieldhands out
bucking the barley while Candy is left behind to brush and clean the spread. He
lost his manus after acquiring it caught in a piece of machinery and as a consequence he
is forced to remain behind. This being one of the major factors that leads to his
solitariness. Furthermore, Candy & # 8217 ; s age adds to his feeling of inutility. Because
he thinks that he is old he puts himself in a province of head that handicaps him
more than his losing manus of all time will. He looks down on himself as an old
worthless adult male that & # 8217 ; s blowing off his last few old ages. Not merely is it the manner
that others think of him, but besides the manner he thinks of himself that forces him
to happen purdah. The most apparent instance of solitariness is Curley & # 8217 ; s married woman. No
affair how difficult she tries she can non suit in. For illustration, when she tries
legion times to speak to George and Lenny she is either ignored or told to
leave. Because of her repute for being a coquette none of the fieldhands want to
talk to her. It is the menace of Ge
tting in problem with Curley that causes many
workers to avoid her. In add-on, because of Curley & # 8217 ; s insecure feelings he
disregards her and forces her to seek attending anyway she can, even if it means
flirtation. She is ignored by both the fieldhands and her ain hubby and because
of this she is being forced into solitariness, the one thing she fights so difficult
against. Crooks is a black adult male that experiences isolation in footings of racism.
For illustration, he is forced to populate entirely in the barn. Because the scene of this
book takes topographic point during the 1930 & # 8217 ; s favoritism unhappily still exists. The
fieldhands feel that since he is black he isn & # 8217 ; t worthy of life with the remainder of
them. Furthermore, his separation from others causes his terrible solitariness. He
spends his darks reading and his yearss entirely in the barn working on the Equus caballuss.
His distance from others will finally do his ruin. We find
favoritism being the major cause of this characters loneliness. He is
treated as an castaway and drudge and is forced t find friendly relationship in the lone thing
that he can, the books he reads. Loneliness is an ineluctable fact of life that
non even the strongest can avoid. Throughout the narrative Of Mice and Men we
discover the many beginnings of purdah, chiefly being favoritism and
bias. Crooks, Candy, and Curley & # 8217 ; s married woman all suffer from these facts which
leads them to their solitariness. As for the effects we find that the
badness of each characters loneliness varied and that the eventual effects were
straight related to the magnitude of their purdah.
