The Outsider and L.A narrative

The novel The Outsider written by Albert Camus and the characteristic movie L.A Story directed by Mick Jackson both contain similar contentions that both work forces in each text are seen to be foreigners by society through their actions and behaviour. Another term for this can be thought to be existential philosophy. Different texts frequently have similar subjects, which can be seen through the two texts selected. Evidence that backs up this statement can be seen through quotation marks in both texts every bit good as behavioural techniques. In the movie the subjects can be seen through camera angles, colourss, symbols and affectional linguistic communication as to the novel the contention is displayed through characters, symbolism and imagination.

The opening scene of the fresh opens really suddenly, mother died today, or may be yesterday, I don t know. This quote straight off tells us there is something different about this adult male, his non sensitive or possibly has no feelings. The gap for the movie was depicting L.A society, people making things all at the same clip ( picking up newspaper ) , people driving carefully to avoid jurisprudence suits, a batch of scenes mentioning to H2O which symbolizes pureness and cleaning. Then there is an extreme close up of Harris Telemacher stating us he has had 7 bosom onslaughts, all imagined due to being happy when he was truly unhappy. After he tells us a spot about him self we are shown his twenty-four hours to twenty-four hours journey to work, which is highly unnatural, he evades traffic and takes a path through back paces and star instances merely to avoid traffic. These two scenes from the novel and movie straight off show us that these work forces are different to society and are seen by everyone as an foreigner.

In the novel The Outsider society was viewed to be really sympathetic. Society would shout when there was a decease of a loved one or when something had gone incorrect. In society of the novel if a adult male didn t call merely after the decease of his female parent it automatically made them different to everyone else. Well that s what happened to the chief character, Meursualt, he was made to be an foreigner because he didn T demo his feelings at his female parents funeral. By Meursault non demoing emotions at his female parents funeral it disturbed all of the visitants paying at that place last respects to his female parent which placed him into the class which he is placed in, an Foreigner. This linked to the characteristic movie L.A Story because Harris Telemacher, the chief character, was besides shown to be an foreigner to society. This was shown many times throughout the film but it was foremost shown in the first two scenes of the movie. We are shown that Harris go forthing his flat on his manner to work and is traveling to be tardily if he goes the normal manner, utilizing streets, so he goes through a series of unnatural roundabout waies merely to acquire to work. He drives on peoples lawns, through their backyards, through tunnels, large puddles, and even made the auto go down stairs merely to avoid the traffic, so merely before he reaches work there is another mention to H2O, he drives the auto though sprinklers to acquire it clean, besides sublimating himself. This fickle drive displayed by Mr. Telemacher, shows

he is non like everyone else, he is different.

In both texts there was a turning point for both characters. In the fresh Meursault s turning point was when he had killed the Arab and was sentenced, and Harris s turning point was when he talked to the mark point. After both of these events both work forces s lives had changed significantly. Meursault had realized that he was really unhappy with his life and if he could alter he would. Harris s life changed every bit good because he had lost his occupation, girlfriend, and director all with a twosome of yearss and had gone through a period of self find. These events portray the subject because it tells us that something truly bad has to go on to them for them to recognize that they were truly unhappy and down.

Symbolism is a really strong technique both Camus and Jackson use to portray the subject. In the novel Meursault was really sensitive to light and it frequently made him sleepy and made him make things unexpected. For illustration one of the grounds that he killed the Arab was because the Sun was reflecting off the gun and the perspiration was film overing his vision in his oculus. In the movie symbolism was really distinguishable from the novel. The novel used a guidepost to demo strong symbolism. The guidepost used a deep mystifier to demo Harris that when he was truly happy he could work out it. The guidepost besides guided him and told that his life would alter twice. Once was when he got fired from his occupation and the other was when Sarah was forced to go forth the plane due to rain. This rain cleansed her and made her realize that Harris was the adult male she loved. Symbolism in the movie was rather powerful as it showed that Harris was different to society.

Society in the movie was seen to be superficial and bogus. Examples of this can be seen when Harris and his girlfriend where holding tiffin with friends and their where people with fictile faces, face lifts and plastic surgery. While in tiffin an temblor hit where they were eating which showed once more shallowness. During tiffin was when Harris met Sarah for the first clip, when she entered the eating house she was in the background of flowers and birds with nice music playing which showed us she was existent and nice.

During the lunch scene Harris can be seen speaking to Sarah a batch as she is besides seen to be an foreigner through her visual aspect and linguistic communication. The ground for this is because he feels at peace speaking to her. A quotation mark that Sarah says to endorse up her being different to everyone else is:

There s nil like some slumber and a good screw wouldn t remedy.

In the novel a quotation mark that Meursault says that disturbs people because of his candor is:

All normal people had more or less coveted decease of those they loved, at some clip or another.

These quotation marks were used to demo us that they don t attention about their candor, which supports the contention.

From all of these illustrations from the writer, Albert Camus and the manager, Mike Jackson we can see that similar texts do and can hold the same subjects and contentions. From the techniques both writer and manager have portrayed the subjects rather good.
