Kate Chopin? s The Story of an Hour and Gail Godwin? s A Sorrowful Woman are both similar pieces of literary work in that both narratives offers a disclosure glance of highly unhappy matrimonies. Both Mrs. Mallard and the nameless kept woman in A Sorrowful Woman called ( the married woman ) seem to uncover a job or perchance a disease which is obviously inherited through the establishment of there matrimonies. They are so unhappy with the lives they lead and the individual ( s ) in them they seem to drive themselves to there ain decease.

The Story of an Hour seems to pick up in the center of an on traveling conflict of Mrs. Mallard? s feelings towards that of her hubby Brantly Mallard, ( which seems to be a nice cat from this short narrative debut ) . This is why you truly can non come to hold on with her hatred towards Mr. Mallard and why she feels it. There is small debut of the hubby Brantly Mallard which leaves any idea or sentiments of him wholly to the imaginativeness, while in A Sorrowful Woman the married woman seems to be a really selfish, and self centered individual who can care merely for herself. Godwin describes largely all features about the hubby and married woman in that the married woman tells her hubby that the sight of himself and the kid made her so ill she did non desire to see them of all time once more.

The hubby being his really understanding self-comments? he understood such things, and asked what would she wish him to make? ( 33 ) .

In the beggary Mrs. Mallard is so overpoweringly happy ( moving really distraught ) to have the wire informing her of Mr. Mallard? s decease but she had to hide her felicity merely because there were loved 1s in her presence including her sister Josephine and Mr. Mallard? s great friend Richard. It was he ( Richard ) who had received intelligence of the decease as he was in the newspaper room and heard fist word of the rail route catastrophe with Brently Mallard? s name at the top of the decease list. Josephine had delivered this information merely before Mrs. Mallard had stormed away to her room for the privacy and purdah that she had needed ( 12-13 ) .

For the married woman in A Sorrowful Woman solitariness and purdah was all that she had wanted out of her household member function throughout the narrative. She was placed to bed the first dark and was given a kiping draft that was guaranteed to set her to rest fleetly after informing her hubby that she wanted to be off and out of the sight of him and their small male child. For many yearss straight the married woman remained there entirely and to her ego merely to look to inquire throughout the house aimlessly a few short times when the house was vacant.

For Mrs. Mallard staying in her room resting in her roommate armchair gazing aimlessly out of the unfastened window was to joy and unleash her true feelings of Mr. Mallard? s decease after a few short minutes of forenoon ( 12 ) . While in A Sorrowful Woman the married woman was detained by her ain province of wretchedness and solitariness for she wanted

to be off from both her hubby and her kid besides ( the bulk of the clip ) posing in

her large chair

gazing out at the snow-ridden subdivisions have oning her slacks and an old jumper ( 35 ) .

While there is no major function playing by Mr. Mallard in The Story of an Hour the hubby in A Sorrowful Woman tries to be really caring in every manner possible to his married woman. The twenty-four hours after everything took topographic point he brought her breakfast in bed and allow her ballad to rest until it grew dark once more, and after taking there boy for a walk he brought her up a tray of buttered toast, Apium graveolens dulce sticks and soup. She says to him? I am the luckiest adult female, ? ( shouting ) he so replies? bunk, you need a remainder from us, ? mentioning to there boy and himself ( 34 ) . He would so go on to take over all of the house hold responsibilities such as: repairing her meals/sleeping liquids, making dishes, doing dinner for the himself and there boy, taking and picking up at that place boy from school, and keeping down his employment at the office every bit good. All of these jobs were get downing to go excessively much for him to manage by himself so with his married woman? s permission he hired in the perfect immature miss that was really dynamic. After a short period of clip the married woman fired the miss because she had brought the kid in to see his female parent and he sat a grasshopper in her manus which made her go really ireful. The hubby so apologized to her and said he would take attention of it but was really defeated that he had to allow the miss go. As clip went by his married woman became more and more distant traveling into a room by her ego, restricting the hubby? s ability to see her, every bit good as her boies.

With the adult females from both narratives still locked off in their suites the clip passes. As Mrs. Mallard is sitting in her chair rustle over and over? Free organic structure and Sole free? her sister Josephine comes to the door and urges her to come out, so she eventually does so and? carried herself inadvertently like a goddess of Victory? ( 14 ) . She so clasped to her sister? s waist doing them both to fall down the step with Richards waiting at the underside. At that same minute in clip the front door clears and Brently Mallard walks through the door with his gripsack and umbrella. He was no where near the accident and at that same minute Mrs. Mallard died with what the physician called a bosom disease. And as for the other distant married woman on her last twenty-four hours of life she withdrew from what had became her sphere for one last baronial achievement. She had cooked supper to last many hebdomads, two hebdomads of fresh-laundered sheets, 5 loafs of staff of life, and had hand-knitted two duplicate jumpers. The adult male and kid ran to the small room, could non incorporate themselves to strike hard flung back the door and there lie his wife/mother restless without the slightest motion and last title ; her freshly-washed hair.

In relationships people must work together as a household in order to last and stay a hole. It is evident in both The Story of an Hour and A Sorrowful Woman the households did non work together as one unit. It appeared both married womans was so submerged in at that place ain sorrow and heartache that no affair how difficult they could hold tried they would hold ne’er nor of all time wanted to see it through to hold what one time may hold been and could hold been a really beautiful relationship.
