Is there a unity of religions?

Introduction

Indeed there is no unity in our religions and that is why people keep on running from one religion to another hoping to find one that will fulfill the faith that he has. If there could be unity, then definitely there could be no issue of the rising of so many religions at the same time. It looks as if we are worshiping different Gods and that is why in a religion like Christianity, you will find more than just enough churches. This could not be so if there could be unity in our religions. This is why; the temple, the churches, mosque, and the vihara are very different from each other. They have different believes and teachings, they perform different rites depending on their teachings. The believers have different opinion on who the creator is and whom they should worship as the true God. In fact that is why different believers cannot sit together to argue on who worships a true God because they rarely come to an agreement if anything they may end up being enemies forever. That is where the Islamic jihad originated, difference in opinions about religion and even went ahead to believe that if anyone dies because he is defending Allah, he will have eternal life. Buddhists on the other hand believe in the resurrection but in another form. Like they believe that if one dies, he will resurrect but in form of an animal, or bird.  Is this why they don’t kill any animal at their disposal? Buddhist believes does not reflect those given by Christians who believe that animals are given by their God as food. This is proved in their first book in their Holy book the Bible called Genesis. When we look at the two terms in separate, we realize that it is taken very differently by different religions; When we talk of sacred space, in Christianity, in the book of Exodus 3:15 it is written, that when God saw Moses moving nearer, he told him not to move any further but to remove his shoes for he was standing in a wholly ground. This was a sacred space, space selected aside for worshiping God. This does not now mean that one should go and look for a bush to make it the sacred place. This can even be in your bedroom, living room or anywhere you think is suitable for you to sit back and reflect on your life. Anywhere that will make you converse with the inner you without much interference. Some may now think of transforming a whole room into a sacred place, no, just a small place that if you convert it to a sacred space it will not inconvenience other people. Sacred time goes hand in hand with sacred place. It is the most valuable commodity a human being has yet most of us tend to forget this so quickly. More often you will hear people saying that they have no time. I think it is a prerequisite one to give him at least time from no pressure. Take time and analyze yourself, give yourself a part on the back where you achieved and talk to the inner you to get guidelines on how you should live best. You can do this even if it is just once per week, it will mean and change a lot. I tend to think that both sacred time and space is just within us because you can even decide to take a work in town. This may not be the case with other religions but most of the religions at least have this in common. In brief let us have a look on different concepts in religion and their time. Let us start with;

Hindus

Most people have stopped implementing the rules that were given by the Hindus because they have proved just not workable. There are even some verses which have been retrieved from their books, and if they have not been removed then they are ignored while they are carrying out their teachings. An example of this is Sati. Religion evolved with time as there were no more child marriages. Of course if this could not be removed then the leaders would have faced some organizations that take care of the child’s rights. I also think that this honor killing should be discouraged in Islamic completely and when I say this I mean that clergy should be on the fore front line to stop this. We always talk of Hindu religion, do we really know the meaning of this? Have we ever wanted to know the deeper meaning of this? In short Hindu just means love. So why do some of them violate the humans rights like they make young girls to get married and they also allow marriage of cousins, In fact they believe that one should marry his cousin. The reason behind this is that they don’t intend to distribute their wealth, in that, if a certain family is known to be rich, that richness should just evolve among them and the poor should not intermarry with them. That is the main reason why they stick to this principle.

My question to them is that are they really portraying the meaning of their name, ‘Hindu’ I thought love is all about sharing the little that you have with your neighbor.  This term “Hindu Religion” came from ancient sastras. This name “Hindu” was actually donated by the foreigners. These people who were from the west, arrived into our land via one of the rivers called “Indus” across the land of Sindhu. So this religion ended u being called Hindu religion and the adjacent neighboring country is normally applied to it. I will tell you a small interesting story that has these connections; one day, while we were seated chatting with my friends, one of my other friend came and told me that “Ramu” is coming, so I was like which ramu? And he immediately replied, are there many ramu. It had not clicked to me that ramu was the name we had given to our God because I was also having my friends with the same name. He told me that those are black ramus and our ramu who was the god had distinguishing features. Though none of us including the one trying to define our God had seen him, we all had to conquer with him. It was then that it dawned to me that we were lacking name for our religion and this is what happens when people come up with so many religions. The problem of identifying it always arises. Buddhism was just discovered by one person called Gautama Buddha. And maybe this is why it has fewer disciples. He has failed to convince and translate people. It has remained so much with the Asians.

Semitic

When you talk just in public about Semitic, people fail to understand what it means because majority of the people nowadays are not versed with this religion. This word was derived from Shem and anyone who is versed with the bible can easily guess that this was the name that was given to the son of Noah. Noah had three sons if you try to follow the Bible so well in the book of Genesis. Sometimes I always wonder which generation we are in now that the generation that belonged for Noah perished in flood after God was unhappy with their conducts. When you read down the lines still in this book of genesis, you realize that his name Shem came also to be their language that they spoke. Because he was the son of Noah as told from the book, it therefore follows that Islam were not part of these groups. We are told that, when Sarah the wife of Abraham failed to give birth, his husband decided to take their maid who gave birth to Ishmael and I believe that is where the Islamic religion originated. (Eliade, M. 1957)

Schuon tries to defend unity of religion asserting that it can only be known and realized

Through metaphysical, eternal, and the divine knowledge can be attained through the intellectual of men. There is no really any unity when it comes to the religion and that

Is why there is still some fight on the religion? When the Buddhists meet with the Islam, they completely do not agree in all the aspects including the dressing code and believes

. This though for the last few years has tended to decline. When it comes to the worshiping, Hindus believe in worshiping their god both as the supreme and as god for the individuals and that is why you find them adoring to idols like a cow. They believe that it is their God. On the other hand, I slams believe that their god has 99 names but they worship just one god. The most used name though is the Allah. Surprisingly if you get any Muslim and ask him to give you all these names they believe it belongs to their god, it is very difficult to get one who will give you all these names. Hindus base their teachings upon incarnations and the Vedas. They also believed in the manifestations. When it comes to tolerance, Islam is very rigid and may not tend to listen to other approaches of the religions. They always believe that they have the best teachings and if anything they are the once to be listened to. Islam believe that through their conversion, they will tend to save people from the eternal damnation .At least with Hindus they may tend to share some believes with other religions. Unlike the Muslims Hindus believe that it is fair if you leave people to choose his religion and having been the oldest religion, it has outstood more than the other religions. The Muslims are never free to let someone to select his religion in fact if it is for a lady, you are not allowed to get married to someone who is not of this religion though they allow men to go out and look for other religion to marry if they so wish. This sounds like they are being selfish as they always want the best for themselves. I wonder if this is what is always preached in the quran. (Schuon F, 2009)

 If you will want to cross the path of the Islamic believers then try and question their origin of their religion or even the way their believers operates, this they will not agree and they may turn out to be very hostile. This unlike other religions like the Hindus, they do not mind when you scientifically study their religion so long as the process is harmonious. As much as in some areas I do not agree with the Hindus, I should give them a credit here that they completely do not like disorder ness. They love peace and this anyone can guess is what the supreme man may want. In Christianity there are brethrens who tend to think that if you are not saved you will not inherit the kingdom of God. Supposing, just supposing there is no that so called ‘heaven’ in the last day, and supposing the people you are avoiding at the present claiming that they are sinful turned out to be righteous, in short my point is, we should not judge, live just according to the way your conscious is telling you. If your conscious tells us that it is good to love that is your life go ahead and live it.

These gaps between the believers have really increased a great deal nowadays.

            Supposing a Muslim appeared on a Sunday service dressed in his Muslim attires, can you imagine what will happen in that church. People will stare at him as if he is one of the wonders in the world. This shows clearly how the gap has increased between the believers. The gap has increased so much to an extent that if you have a friend who is a Muslim the only thing you can talk about is business and anything else but not religion. When it comes to religion, there is nothing to talk about as you may never agree and people fear discussing different religions for fear of loosing the friendship they may have a acquired. The scripture tells us that it is not easy to trace the way the sage pursues as it is meant to draw a line that marks the course in the air as it is on its wings. Mankind generality takes heart when the sage tends to appear but it is not able to keep the pace with him.

Conclusion

            The correlation of the analysis of different religions was done in an extensive way by various prophets who always aimed at coming to make the world peace. Scriptures are given by different forms of God, if anyone can approve the unity about the form of God and realize the concept that there is a single God in different types of religions, then that may be the beginning of the unity in various religions. I have one humble question to those people who say that it is their religion that leads to eternal life and that other religions leads to hell, and the question is this, I have heard the preaching of your religion yes you claim that if I follow your path, I will go to heaven and if I neglect, I will go to hell, it makes sense actually but my worry is just one, during our time of ancestors, the name did not exist but they worshiped. Even if I have an assumption that my ancestors will rebirth and follow our path now, let us rule out this because we are told that there is completely no soul rebirth. God should have been impartial to reveal your religion to the ancestors.  With this I mean that your God is partial.  I believe that it is this one God whom we worship but interpreters are so many.  It is in fact this reason that destabilizes the unity that would have existed among the religions. As much as there is no unity in the religion, I pray that people should remain united and loving. Some people try defending unity of religion claiming that, God appeared in all the countries and preached the same message though through a variety of messages. And that the only difference was that there were different teachers while spreading this gospel. They also claim that media that was used to spread the gospel was different but we had the same syllabus and explanations. I broadly oppose these because it is not written anywhere whatsoever, so how do they expect us to believe them and on which basis should we believe them anyway.

I want this divine knowledge of logic sword to reduce the conservatism that is so rigid to the believers of this universe and bring peace among them. I need not to persuade any individual to love your neighbor so as to ensure peace in the world because it was done already long time ago. Though the believers are sure that there is no unity among their religions, they surely ought to be united as their hearts are brought together by these appeals. The coming generation will fight amongst themselves because they will not feel the existence of this real unity according to their religious readings. The begging appeal may not result to a permanent solution because it may unite or fail to unite the followers. My point here is not on agreement but on the realization of this as it may result to eternal global peace. According to Mathew 7:13-14, it says, ‘enter the narrow gate, as wide is for gate and big is the way that translates to destruction and there is much who goes by it.’ Bhagavathgita asserts, “Sahasreshu Manushyaanam……..” meaning that, most of the believers can try reaching God but only one can reach him. This implies that, that spiritual path is too narrow for majority to reach him. Is it true that in religion, there is only one God, one sankara and one Buddha? I do not believe this but anyway, when it comes to the world life, just follow the majority but when it comes to the spiritual life; you just have to follow the minority. According to (Luke 13: 20-21) it clearly states that, if you associate yourself with Satguru, then you will be strengthened spiritually by his gospel. In the book of Matthew: 5:17 it says, “don’t think I came to destroy the prophets or the Law, I came to fulfill”. Most of the old statements proved to be revolutionary.

Similarly in Hindus some preachers like Ramanuja wash their legs but the wind blows back the dirt again. This implies that in every new generation, the dirt always comes back again. The way electricity must go hand in hand with the wire, which is the way Holy Spirit cannot be separated from his holy father. Jesus insisted that he should be called the messenger because he knew that a human being will not accept him as Jesus because he resembled human beings. This is very true because even today when a human being came and told you that he is the Messiah, will you believe that person? The disciples therefore become the instruments of proclaiming the word of God. He humbles down when he says that he is the messenger. This is also a sign of submissiveness and this is a good example that he expected people to follow. God is omnipresent as proved by Vedas. We believe that God is omnipotent and can fulfill people’s desires. If you are a devotee I think you should not ask God for assistance. But in short, there is still no unity still among religions that currently exists in the universe. And in fact if there should be any unity, It is actually declining because of different believes that different religions believe in. Much has been said but the more we move into a new generation, the more we get worse with this unity in the religions. No wonder there has failed to come up with a permanent solution on this issue of terrorism; this is mainly brought due top the religion differences. The Islam cannot accept uniting with any religion that is not preaching the same version as theirs yet there is freedom of worship meaning that we may not all even if it is twenty years to come, never will we come up with unity in our religion.  It is even my prayer anyway that one day we will come to appreciate one another’s religion and live as brothers and sisters and this for instance will end this international terrorism, Islamic Jihad and other religious movements that are normally brought up due to the religious differences.
