In some plants of literature a character who appears briefly or does non look

at all has a important presence. Even though a character may non be present in

a drama, does non intend that they have no importance. In fact, these characters

hold more of an influence over the manner the other characters act and speak. Two

dramas that exhibit this are Miss Julie, by August Strindberg and Mourning

Becomes Electra, by Eugene O & # 8217 ; Neill. In Mourning Becomes Electra, Ezra Mannon has

a comparatively little portion ; he is seldom even in the drama, yet he has such an

of import function. He sets the temper to the drama and his actions, even though he is

non at that place, state how the other characters will move. Mannon & # 8217 ; s girl, Lavinia is

in love with him, it is he she would make anything for. Lavinia becomes so covetous

of her female parent & # 8217 ; s relationship with her male parent. She loves her male parent so much that

she convinces her brother to kill their female parent & # 8217 ; s lover, Brant, in order to seek

retaliation upon her. Due to the deficiency of love and fondness that Ezra gives to his

married woman, Christine, she takes it upon herself to seek retaliation of her ain. She takes

a lover, non merely any lover, but an enemy of the household. She so poisons her

hubby and kills him. All of these incidents are caused by Ezra, even though

some are caused by him indirectly. In Miss Julie, by August Strindberg, The

Count, even though he is non present at a

really strong function. His presence in the drama is really intense and u can clearly see

how he influences all of the other characters in this drama. You can see how all

of the other characters are willing to make anything he says. In the drama Jean

Tells Julie that he would pleasantly kill himself if the Count had asked him to

make so. You can see from this quotation mark how respectful Jean is towards the Count.

I? ve ne’er met anyone I had such regard for. When I see his baseball mitts lying on a

chair, I feel little. When I hear that bell up at that place pealing, I jump like a flighty

Equus caballus. And when I look at his boots standing at that place so stiff and proud, I feel

like bowing! ( Strindberg 395 ) . This quotation mark clearly shows how Jean is about

afraid of the Count. At the terminal of this drama, Julie becomes so panicky of what

her male parent is traveling to state that she plans on running off with Jean, but she

ends up killing herself alternatively. She talks about how her male parent had tried to

kill himself but was ne’er able to make it, this may do her to make it at the

terminal. When the Count returns at the terminal of the drama, he calls Jean to clean his

boots, Jean nervously obeys him, from this you can see how much of an affect he

has on all of the characters. Therefore you can see from these illustrations how even

though characters may non look in a narrative, or they merely appear briefly, they

bashs have a significance.
