Oedipus & # 8217 ; s Inextinguishable Defects
Flaws pestilence every adult male and adult female on this planet. Defects are what we have in common with each other, and all features that make us human. Sophocles & # 8217 ; s Oedipus, shows that sometimes the combination of certain defects and other human features can hold a tragic result. The caring King Oedipus was paranoid and short tempered, and these features brought him to his ruin.
From the beginning of the narrative Oedipus is depicted as a baronial lovingness adult male. He is greatly distressed about the pestilence in Thebes. & # 8220 ; My psyche mourns the metropolis & # 8230 ; & # 8221 ; ( Sophocles 305 )
he tells the priest and the agony people of Thebes. If Oedipus did non care for his land, he ne’er would hold bothered to seek out Laius & # 8217 ; s liquidator. Oedipus besides mourned the decease of his married woman. As good, Oedipus proves himself a loving male parent towards his girls, by inquiring Creon to take attention of them.
One of the chief grounds for Oedipus & # 8217 ; s expatriate is his short pique. Oedipus loses his pique with Tireseas, because he will non state Oedipus the truth. After Tireseas speaks the truth, Oedipus grows even more short tempered, and twits Tireseas for being blind. Oedipus so accuses Creon of directing Tireseas to do Oedipus believe he is the liquidator. After Oedipus accuses Creon he tells him, & # 8220 ; I do non want your ostracism & # 8211 ;
but your death.” ( Sophocles 313 ) The decease of Laius would ne’er hold occurred if it was non for Oedipus’s short pique. Despite his married woman and Tireseas & # 8217 ; s warnings, Oedipus falls easy into death on this awful twenty-four hours.
In decision, Oedipus & # 8217 ; s death was brought by his paranoia, short pique, and his sensitiveness to other people & # 8217 ; s hurting. These are emotional defects shared by all of us to different grades. It is interesting to see that the emotional jobs of the bosom we deal with in modern times besides tormented the ancient Greeks.
