Political Theory: Morality

Free Articles

Morality is the principles concerning the difference between right and wrong. Ones behavior is affected by these principles. Morality is the belief that certain behaviors are good or bad. Morality gives human beings “laws” to live their lives by. Now morality can be seen in different ways. The laws that morality apparently gives us to live our live by, are given by “God”. Now not everyone feels that way, the religious people believe that God gave them a set of morals to follow, and they believe that people who don’t believe in their God have no morals.

Now speaking from the atheists side, they will say that even if they are not religious that they still have morals. I believe that knowing the difference between right and wrong is taught to everyone starting from birth. You also learn the difference from right and wrong when you make a mistake. A moral behavior gets a lot of approval, while any immoral acts are condemned. When it comes to deciding if I believe morality should be considered in politics I believe that morality should not be considered with political thought.

The reason why I think that morality has a place in political thoughts, is simply because your thoughts on something whether it be considered political or not, might be completely different than another person’s morals. I feel like the concept of morality should not be involved in political thought, because I feel like no decisions would ever be made, because everyone has a different way at looking at situations. For example a man may think that it is absolutely wrong and against God to have an abortion; a woman may think that she can do whatever she wants to her body because it’s her body.

The man might try to get abortions banned from his state and the woman may try to fight against him. Now who’s right in this situation? Neither of them are correct, because their morals are different. I believe that it is okay to have morals and to follow a set of rules that you believe in, that will better your life. But I believe that the concept of morality has no right in political thought. Another reason why it does not have a place in political thought, is that I think that political thinkers should be open minded , especially if you are in power to make big decisions.

Now I do realize that no one will ever be fully open minded and everyone will most likely pick one side, but I think that if one stays open minded and can see from both sides, better decisions can be made. I think that there are different ways to look at morality. A lot of people see morality as a good thing, bettering human lives and how we make decisions. But I think that morality a lot of times can be seen as a bad thing, and making people seem heartless. I think it all depends on if you are religious or not and what kind of community you live in, to make a decision about how you think about morality.

Now when trying to find a political thinker who supports my position when it comes to morality, I’m going to be discussing ones that support me and how the political thinkers who believe morality should be in politics went about doing it. I feel like how some political thinkers viewed morality in political thought is a lot different then how it would be viewed now. Gandhiji pleaded for moral values in political behavior because he believed that immoral political actions will hurt the interest of the people in the long run.

Gandhiji rejected all forms of violence and was a peaceful man. Now a problem that I have with how Gandhiji was towards being moral, is that if one were to do something considered immoral and they are criticized and condemned, isn’t that a form of violence? Confucius had very good ideas about virtue and ethics that were good for his time. Confucius wanted his follows to be better at making judgments than understanding what the rules are. Confucius believed that people had more value than property. He also was big on self improvement.

I feel like Confucius had really good intentions, but I feel like if his way of thinking was applied in the United States, people wouldn’t go for it. I feel like people in politics in the states are more involved with making their lives better, opposed to helping out others too. Machiavelli believed that no matter if there is morality or not, there is no guarantee that everyone will follow them. Machiavelli believed that moral values have no place in the kind of decisions that political leaders must make.

Machiavelli was considered the Galileo of Politics because he would try to distinguish the difference between fact of political life and the values or peoples moral judgement. I feel like how politics are today, morality does not have a place, because a long time ago when morality was applied, it was meant to better humans and to make people want to live a better life. I feel like people’s morals get in the way of certain issues and just shouldn’t be involved. But we will probably never get away from morality.

I do believe that people should know the difference between good and bad, but if the decision you make while figuring out if it’s good or bad, hurts someone, I don’t think that is being very moral. Morality is too involved in religion and I don’t think religion has a place in political thought. I think that there should be a set of rules and values one should give themselves, but they should also consider how their decisions can effect other people in society.
