I’ve always believed that life is all about making choices; choices that define us as we grow older. Whether good or bad, these choices are very important to us since every decision we make gives us learning, and in every learning we grow. In my life, I’ve made many choices, and one of the most important of which is my choice to give importance to the people around me.

When I was young, I am just an ordinary child. Unlike my cousins and friends, I was not used to being given any special attention. In short, I was just an average kid who goes through the day without being noticed and is used to having my own little world. However, everything changed after this significant event in my life.

I was sixteen then when I got involved in an accident that almost claimed my life. My friends and I went to another friend’s party. Matilda, my friend, brought her car with her. During those times, having a car is a big deal since you have the freedom to go to many places. And also, you become popular and more people wanted to be with you.

Matilda, however, was a relatively a new driver then; she only received her driver’s permit a few months ago and she was still getting used to driving. That night, she had a few shots of alcohol and was feeling a bit dizzy. Lorraine, our other friend, presented to drive the car since she had her student’s permit with her. However, Matilda was persistent and assured us that everything was alright and she could drive us home. While on our way, we were feeling dizzy and wanted to sleep at the back of the car. But Matilda kept talking to us and kept convincing us not to sleep since she was also feeling the same. The car started to swerve and we panicked. We felt that the car was going to turn upside down. Then, bright lights suddenly rushed towards us. Matilda turned the wheel to avoid the approaching vehicle. But, because of our speed, the car lost control and crashed though the fence before I lost my consciousness.

When I woke up, I saw bright lights around me. I was coughing hardly and had difficulty catching my breath. The tube in my mouth was choking me and I wanted it out immediately. I didn’t immediately realize that I was at a hospital bed. Then, the first person I saw was my mother. With tears in her eyes, she asked how I felt. However, I was still confused and was feeling pain throughout my body.

When everything calmed down, my mother explained everything. She told me that Matilda and Lorraine were both alright; they only suffered minor bruises and had awakened a day earlier. However, I had a different fate. I was unconscious for three days and it turned out that I was thrown out of the car and hit a huge tree. The doctors said that I had a slim chance of recovery since I suffered from internal bleeding. But, they also said that I was very lucky since not everyone who suffered from the same accident survived.

This experience, although extremely traumatic, taught me that I could be different. It taught me that I could do something better than the usual routine schedule I do everyday. It also taught me to appreciate life and the little things it brings. I cherish this second life given to me, and since then, I have been an advocate for social awareness. I share my story to other people to make them realize that life is full of experiences that help us grow as an individual. Though life may be filled with difficulties, these all help us to become better people.
