It seems that the biggest question on the minds of many teenagers these days are whether teenage relationships are right, wrong, or somewhere in between, or whether they are meant for a different age, or whether getting into them with certain limits is acceptable to some extent. A very good day to Mrs P Naidoo and my fellow classmates. My speech depicts the various pros and cons to having a romantic relationship or being romantically involved with someone at such an early age.

I’ve been thinking about this for quite some time and so I thought maybe I should write it down to reach some conclusion, instead of being all confused about it. From what I’ve observed around, and within me, i find that most teenagers are generally supportive or these relations and many are found to indulge into them after the age of 15 or 16.

Some of the “singles” claim that their parents need to approve of their long term partner, and some say they would end their relationships if their parents did not approve, and i find that most parents are fiercely against children getting inoto relationships before the age of 19, and many are found to oppose restrictions on their children in order to prevent them from getting any chances of being in a relationship at a young age. Generation gap? Conservative thinking? Lack of trust? Fear of having their child get into some situation they would like?

Insecurity of what would happen to their child and their reputation? Uncertainty of the maturity of their child? Protective measures of the well-being of their children? Concerned about their child’s academic achievements suffering because of distractions? Perhaps all of the above While speaking about teenage romantic relationships we cannot neglect the pros and cons very often we hear on the news channels or read in newspapers, about dating violence or abuse relationships it’s been found that females age between 16 to 24 face physical violence during the early stages of a relationship.

It is stated that 20 to 30 percent of teens in romantic relationships suffer psychological abuse, either verbally or emotional. In order to avoid such issues, there should be proper understanding and communication between the parents and their child. Since parents want the best for their children, they are the ones who can provide the best advice about staying out of unhealthy relationships. But at the same time, healthy relationships can have certain positive values. A healthy relationship is characterised by communication and trust. Through adolescent elationships or teen dating are often neglected, it is interesting to know that such relationships help in the overall development of teenagers as youth. Adolescent relationships often have long lasting effects and help in providing emotional support, developing self-esteem and personal identification values. And in conclusion, i hope that you all learned that communication is the key to all relationships, especially the ones we have with our parents. Being in a relationship with someone doesn’t mean that you should forget the world, or think that life couldn’t get better and stop there.

We are all still really and i believe that life has so much more wonderful things to offer. So don’t make any decisions that would affect you in the long run, if you know very well that it may be safe, be strong, be wise, and don’t rush. Just remember that all good things come to those who wait. The main purpose of me choosing this topic was to show you that even if you have a relationship you are not pressurised into doing anything that you do not feel comfortable with as you always have a choice in every decision that concerns you, because you are in charge of your life.
