He excessively faces many mental and societal challenges. In both novels, these characters go through many battles to happen their way in life.

In both books, Holden and Esther were in a phase of their lives that proved to be really hard mentally on each of them. Holden, at the age of 16, had been in a private school and left. He ventured off into the metropolis to confront the adversities that came with the bundle. Esther, an award-winning pupil was sent to New York on a scholarship. Both of these characters ended up in topographic points that they did non suit in. When Esther was in New York, she tried to be person she wasn t. This caused her to non bask her stay ; she simply put on a frontage. Holden on the other manus couldn t stand people seeking to be what they weren t. He called these people hypocrites. Neither in which realized their mental prostrations. As their conditions get worse, the idea of self-destruction enters both their heads.

After each character had reached their ultimate low, ideas of self-destruction crossed their heads. Holden stated, I woke up singing this forenoon. I mean, I was happy and all. But last dark, what I truly felt like was leaping out the window. Al

cubic decimeter I could see were these hypocrites – I ne’er left the house though. They were on Television, in books and material, moving out madman material in the God dike films. I swear sometimes I think I’m loony, surrounded by these Gods dam princes doing out like life’s perfect and all. That kills me. Then person wakes them up, and they all get sore as snake pit about it. But I lie singing in bed. He had reached such a low in his life, that life itself did non count to him. He saw life as a rough world that he did non desire to be a portion of. Esther non merely thought about self-destruction, she fell off the border and attempted self-destruction. The significance of life was considered nil to her.

Something that both Holden and Esther shared in common was a individual of the opposite sex that they ever mentioned. Esther continually brought up Buddy Willard, her adult male from her hometown. Throughout the book she gave small narratives of what and Buddy did in the old ages past. However, her indicants ne’er made one believe that she wanted to be with him. She made the reader believe that Buddy was a individual of the past, but a individual non out of her head. Holden on the other manus had a miss by the Jane that was systematically in his head. In the novel, Holden keeps stating the reader that he s traveling to name her, or some manner get in touch with her. Once once more, both characters sharing another similarity with one another.

As one can see, both Holden and Esther shared a similar position on the life they were populating. Unfortunately, the lives that they both lived were really painful and dejecting. The comparing of the two proved to be outstanding, but showed the rough world of depression. Each was on the threshold of catastrophe, coming merely moments off from ineluctable destiny.
