The Crucible: The Witchcraft Hysteria

In 1692, in Salem Massachusetts, the superstitious notion of enchantresss existed in

a society of strong Christian beliefs. Anybody who acted out of the ordinary

was accused of being a enchantress and so the accuse would really be forgiven if

the blamed their accusals on another person. This was the chief thought of a

drama entitled, The Crucible by Arthur Miller. In this drama a group of immature

misss act up and are so accused of being enchantresss. These misss so fault

other people in order to acquire out of problem and even feign to be & # 8220 ; bewitched & # 8221 ;

in forepart of the tribunal during a test. This leads into the deceases of some

guiltless people who were accused and automatically found guilty. I believe, in

many ways the people of Salem were responsible for the enchantress craze.

The individual with the most influence was the character, Abigail. Abigail

had an matter with a adult male by the name of John Proctor. Proctor broke contact

with Abigail and exhausted clip and involvement in his married woman, Elizabeth. Abigail gets

covetous because of this and Abigail, a few other misss, and a retainer from the

Caribbean named Tituba dance about in a order that they believe it will kill

Proctor & # 8217 ; s married woman. Rev. Parris, Abigail & # 8217 ; s uncle, sees this and reports it. When

Abigail is questioned about this, she denies everything and doesn & # 8217 ; t state the

truth about what truly happened. The intelligence of her and the other miss & # 8217 ; s strange

actions gets about and the craze starts. Without Abigail & # 8217 ; s superstitious notion,

and her fright or stating the truth, I think the events in The Crucible wouldn & # 8217 ; T

have gotten every bit serious as they did or even started.

John Proctor was another accelerator to the enchantress craze in Salem. John

Proctor has an matter with Abigail, but he and his married woman do do up and acquire

along good. John Proctor adds to the craze when he and his married woman are speaking

about Abigail and why she is moving so curiously. Although John Proctor knows she

is doing up everything and blaming guiltless people, he is loath to go

to Salem and attest her as a fraud to the tribunal. If he would hold done this

the enchantress tests could h

ave stopped at that place. Another manner John Proctor could hold

contributed to this lunacy but his moral didn & # 8217 ; t allow him happen when at the terminal

of Act IV he says he will squeal to the jurisprudence who he saw with the Satan in order

to salvage himself from deceasing or from imprisonment. Fortunately, John Proctor

recognize this is incorrect and he does non give the confession and he hangs because

of it. Although finally John Proctor did add to the craze a small, he

still helped it halt.

The last individual I think was played a large portion in the spirit of the enchantress

craze is Governor Danforth. Danforth was a large portion of the existent tests and

his tribunal system was really barbarous and barbarian, in fact he said, & # 8220 ; If you are

non with the tribunal, you are against it & # 8221 ; which fundamentally means in my sentiment, if

you are on test and you don & # 8217 ; t believe what the tribunal believes so you are

guilty. His words in this sentence where a immense portion of the decision on what

finally happened to the misss and all that were involved. The tribunal believed

they were all enchantresss and they truly had no opportunity to turn out them incorrect.

Danforth contributed to the craze another manner in the method that he used to

justice who was guilty in footings of grounds. He believed word of oral cavity more than

existent proven grounds, largely because he wanted these tests over fast and he

wanted it to turn out the manner he wanted the trails to stop. Without Danforth & # 8217 ; s

nescient tribunal processs and weak justness system, the trails would hold gone

much better and the truth of the craze would hold most likely been uncovered.

The ignorance and superstitious notion of the people of Salem were responsible

for the enchantress craze. I believe that this sort of craze could ne’er be

in a society like I live in today. Today & # 8217 ; s tribunals are much better than the

theocratic church/courts of the late 1600 & # 8217 ; s. Another thing to see is that

our Declaration of Independence and our freedom provinces that we have freedom of

faith. So even if person was a & # 8220 ; enchantress & # 8221 ; and didn & # 8217 ; t harm anybody they would

have more problem from today & # 8217 ; s media than from the jurisprudence. I am glad I didn & # 8217 ; T

hold to travel through that horror and I & # 8217 ; m happy I ne’er will.
