The Legacy of the Great War

After reading William R. Keylor & # 8217 ; s The Legacy of the Great War, I realized the of import events that pertain to the international dealingss. Until our present twenty-four hours there has non been so many great leaders come together to turn to issues such as: political relations, economic sciences, and societal scenes in Europe. This is the beginning of the jobs in European civilisation.

The Paris Peace conference had a sum of 27 states with their highest representatives and Plutos who devise a peace colony. For two months they had redrawn the map of Europe with political and economical agreements. It took another six months for the leaders who defeated the Central Powers to make up one’s mind which regulations that would regulate the postwar order. The Central Power leaders are besides known as the Big Four who was: President Woodrow Wilson of the United States, Prime Minister David Lloyd George of Great Britain, Premier Georges Clemenceau of France, and Prime Minister Vittorio Orlando of Italy. After all the peace shapers of the pacts was making the fire for the Second World War in 1939.

During the Peace Conference there was two subjects that was really critical. The first is that each winning European ally had betrayed the new diplomatic negotiations of President Woodrow Wilson and hence deprived the postwar international order of its moral

justification. The 2nd subject is the Punic colony, which the masters virtually dismantled Germany of all of its power economically and military.

When the Peacemaking conference began, President Wilson promised Poland a & # 8220 ; free and unafraid entree & # 8221 ; to the Baltic Sea. ( p.19 ) The port of Danzinger had an overwhelmingly German population there with different spiritual patterns. With self-determination Wilson balanced antithetical considerations. He already promised Poles a free port, and France besides wanted to weaken Germany by giving Poland district. The result of the German-Polish Frontier is a free international port in the custodies of Polish control.

After the war the Gallic wanted to destruct the German economic system. The Gallic wanted control of the German coalmines. But Wilson would non hold. He was looking out for the Germans economically. Premier Clemenceau called Wilson pro-German which evidently hurted the President. ( p.29 ) With this traveling on President Wilson was self-determine to make his best for the redrawing of Europe. Most leaders in France believed the manner to weaken Germany without aching it economically was to travel Germans under regulation of other states. Most of these little provinces have ne’er set up a stable authorities for themselves and adding big sum of Germans to their native lands could be unsafe. This is one manner how Wilson and his delegates were violated.

One of Gallic chief ends in the Peace Conference was security from the Germans in the hereafter. The lone manner for this is if the Americans and British take charge, and give the Germans a clout and ne’er allow them acquire up once more. Germany is the strongest state on the Continental Europe. The Germans have the Rhineland, which is a shield

against aggression. On April 22, 1919 Wilson and George came up with a Gallic security expression. The pledge to support France against any German aggression, and German disarming, decrease of the German ground forces to 100,000 work forces, demilitarization of a zone 50 kilometres east of the Rhine. ( 91 ) The Gallic wanted the Rhine River for an allied military base at the four chief crossings. Wilson would non let this, because it would interrupt his national self-government.

During the Punic Peace settlem

ent, John Maynard Keynes published a book called “The Economic Consequences of the Peace.” Harmonizing to Keynes he is a hostile critic of President Wilson and his Fourteen Points peace pact. ( 122 ) With Keynes facts I believe he was wholly right. The pact ignored the economic jobs that Germany faced. Germany is economic system was built on coal and Fe. After the pact the coal could non be mined or delivered to other states. Besides, 75 per centum of the Fe ore came from Alsace-Lorraine, which the French reclaimed after WWI. With the cutback of coal and Fe Europe was even more unsettled so it was.

I believe that Germany was responsible to pay for the war amendss. Since they started the war a batch of civilians lost their places and farms. They were the 1s who declared war on France, and Russia at the beginning. Keynes said that everyone was responsible for war amendss. I disagree with him. Germany received a bad trade with the prohibition on coal trading and loss of the Alsace-Lorraine Fe ore sedimentations. However they do merit to pay for the war.

Following inquiry at the conference, what to make with the African and Asiatic settlements that belong to Germany? Already the Germans were unfit colonial swayers. Wilson

McIntire 4

proclaimed that this was portion of his international trust territory of self-government. During the conference they decided that the settlements should give up to the staying five winning states. Germany argued that this thought was non a just colonial accommodation.

When the Ottoman Empire collapsed it turn out to be the longest and most hard pact to finalise. The ottomans lost 32.7 % of its population and a fifth of its land. ( 177 ) Americans had no involvement in commanding the Ottomans, but France and England had other programs. Because of this a batch of new states popped up when the Middle East wars developed and pacts were signed. These states did non desire patriotism with European powers. They did non desire to be controlled by Anglos or French. Finally they did acquire land in the Middle East with military trading and agreements. However, they could non maintain control of the land that they received.

Adolf Hitler & # 8217 ; s speech on April 28, 1939 did interrupt the Treaty of Versailles. He said, & # 8220 ; I have worked merely to reconstruct that which others one time broke by force. & # 8221 ; ( 53 ) When he took over the Rhine River, and continued to add to his ground forces and excess over 100,000 soldiers he broke the pact. The dry thing was after reading his address I felt like he had done nil incorrect. A batch of things he said were really true. The pact did destruct political order in Europe economically, and divided nationalities. The Germans could non admit the Austria community that they had confessed for more so a thousand old ages. ( 53 ) Since the Treaty of Versailles the German economic system was down. This led to migrations to other states. In his address, Hitler merely wanted to emancipate about four million Germans, and return to their thousand-year-old Reich. For Hitler to unify

McIntire 5

his Germans he had to take different national and cultural groups in Germany. Which clearly broke the pact.

I ne’er thought by reading Keylor & # 8217 ; s The Legacy of the Great War, I would larn the all right inside informations of the Paris Peace program. The book goes in great item that enables me to understand everyone & # 8217 ; s sentiment. However I did non hold with everybody actions and ideas on the pact. I understood what they were looking for in the result. I now have a different feeling for Adolf Hitler. He was really powerful through his addresss and commanding a people & # 8217 ; s head. I believe he had great thoughts but did non cognize how to put to death them in the proper mode.
