The Hollow of the Three Hills is a narrative of dishonour,

fraudulence, and decease. The writer, Nathaniel Hawthorn portrays

the chief character as a beautiful adult female with a shameful and

detestable yesteryear. She tries to run from her jobs but

comes to happen out no affair how large or little a job,

seeking to run from it will merely do the job follow.

The chief character was so driven by wonder and

compunction that she brought herself to travel see a enchantress. They

met in a topographic point described by Hawthorne as & # 8220 ; a hollow basin,

about mathematically round, two or three 100 pess in

comprehensiveness, & # 8230 ; the resort of the Power of Evil and his plighted

subjects. & # 8221 ; ( Hawthorne 103 ) This describes the character as

person who is a plighted topic who had such a secret that

she had to be where & # 8220 ; no person could detect them & # 8221 ; ( Hawthorne

103 ) She wanted this enchantress to assist her see and hear what was

go oning with her loved 1s ; but she merely had one hr to

make so and after this one hr she would decease Hawthorne did

non come out and state this but in stating things like & # 8220 ; there

is but a short hr that we may loiter here. & # 8221 ; ( Hawthorne 103 )

and I will make your command though I die ( Hawthorne 103 ) . She

had run from everything that was of import to her because

the most of import, was deceasing. Hawthorne was non excessively clear

in saying what precisely the job was but it seemed that

her girl had fallen badly.

Throughout the narrative Hawthorne masks this fact good and

utilizations boding nicely. In one portion where the chief

character is looking in on her parents by agencies of the

enchantresss powers and Hawthorne describes her parents as

talking & # 8220 ; & # 8230 ; of a girl, a roamer they knew non where,

bearing dishonour along with her, and go forthing shame and

affliction to convey their grey caputs to the grave. They

alluded besides to other and more recent suffering, & # 8221 ; ( Hawthorne 104 )

The girl rolling bearing shame is the chief character,

who tried to run from her job which was what they spoke

of following. The more recent suffering they were touching to was

their granddaughter & # 8217 ; s decease.

Next the chief character looked in upon her hubby

which she had left to bear the brunt of their girl & # 8217 ; s

mourning. The chief character had left her hubby all entirely

in the universe except for their death girl and was now

experiencing such compunction that she had to see a enchantress merely to

cognize how he was. He was non good at all, for she had broken

his bosom and & # 8220 ; he spoke of a adult female & # 8217 ; s perfidiousness, of a married woman who

had broken her holiest vows & # 8221 ; ( Hawthorne 104 ) . Not merely had

she left him with hurting and agony for their kid but she

had besides left him with hurting and antipathy towards her.

She tried to run off from her girl & # 8217 ; s illness and

infringing decease, but by making so merely brought guilt and

compunction upon herself. She must hold known that her hubby

would hold strong feelings of antipathy towards her and

still volitionally looked in on his life to see how he was.

The portion in the narrative when she looked back towards her

hubby was the portion of the narrative that stuck out the most as

Nathaniel Hawthorne & # 8217 ; s manner of composing. This was a good

illustration of his & # 8216 ; Puritan Guilt Ethic & # 8217 ; . She felt such compunction

for go forthing that the merely good thing to make was to look into up

on him and see if he was all right. Nathaniel Hawthorne

uses the & # 8216 ; Puritan Guilt Ethic & # 8217 ; in most of his short narratives

and novels and this is one illustration of him utilizing it.

The last thing the adult female does out of guilt is checks up

on her girl. The enchantress uses her powers to let the

chief character to look back at her girl ; but when she

looks back for her girl she doesn & # 8217 ; t see her all she sees

is a funeral emanation.

The girl died of her unwellness as Hawthorne

foreshadowed throughout the short narrative by composing such

things as & # 8220 ; into the tone of a decease bell & # 8221 ; ( Hawthorne 105 ) and

& # 8220 ; like lamplight on the wall of a sepulchre. & # 8221 ; ( Hawthorne 103 )

The chief character left her girl to decease and that is merely

what happened. Looking back in retrospect the chief

character likely would hold stayed with her girl.

She cared plenty to give her life for merely one hr of

looking in on the 1s she loved and more than probably would

hold liked to be their with them in this clip of bereavement.

Not merely could she hold been at that place to assist them but more

significantly they could hold been at that place to assist her. As a

female parent watching her girl & # 8217 ; s funeral brigade must hold

broken her bosom but watching it through a enchantresss enchantment

must hold shattered it.

Hawthorne & # 8217 ; s chief character chose to run like a coward

and in the terminal paid the worst effect of all. She gave

up her life to witness the hurting and agony she had cause

others. With her girl dead by disease, her hubby

infuriated with hatred and hurting, and her parents filled with

disgust and humiliation she had no 1 that cared about her

all because she couldn & # 8217 ; t manage the emotional emphasis. How

much emotional emphasis does it look she caused to others in

the terminal though? She tried to get away her responsibilities as a married woman

and female parent but they merely followed her to the really terminal.
