THE ONSLAUGHT OF LOVE
During the 18th century, many poets explored the constructs of love. Many of these verse forms discussed lost loves, or unreturned love. John Donne discussed his feelings towards love in his verse form & # 8220 ; The Broken Heart. & # 8221 ; Donne personifies love in this verse form by stating how one time grasped by love, it is impossible to retrieve from it.
In the first stanza of & # 8220 ; The Broken Heart & # 8221 ; Donne opens by stating that love is non something that is limited by clip. & # 8220 ; He is blunt mad, who of all time says, / That he hath been in love an hr, / Yet non that love so shortly decays, & # 8221 ; ( l. 1-3 ) . Donne is stating that love can non be turned on and off. If one is in love his he can non be in love one minute and non the following. He juxtaposes being in love for a minute to stating that one saw pulverization burn for a twenty-four hours or holding the pestilence for a twelvemonth. & # 8220 ; Who will believe me /That I have had the pestilence a twelvemonth? / Who would non express joy at me, if I should state, / I saw a flask of pulverization burn a twenty-four hours? & # 8221 ; ( l. 5-8 ) These things are impossible merely as being in love for an hr are impossible.
In the 2nd stanza of the verse form, Donne begins to why it is impossible for love to last for short period of clip. In the following stanza Donne uses rhetorical inquiry to inquire if his analogy of how love affects the bosom is non true than what did go on when he lost his bosom to his love. & # 8220 ; If & # 8217 ; twere non so, what did become/ Of my bosom, when I foremost saw thee & # 8221 ; ( l. 17-18 ) When he went into the relationship he had a bosom ; nevertheless when it was over his love kept his bosom. In fact he non merely had she stolen his H
eart, love and fondness, love shattered it like a broken glass. “If it had gone to thee, I know/ Mine would hold taught thine bosom to show/ More commiseration unto me: but Love, alas, /At one first blow did shudder it as glass.” ( l. 21-24 ) The adult female had no usage for his love and treated him so bad that she non merely rupture his bosom from him she shattered his bosom as good. Donne points out in this stanza how fragile the bosom is. He says that unreturned love can shatter the bosom like glass.
In the concluding stanza the writer, feels he will ne’er acquire over the loss of his love. His thorax is non wholly empty, but it contains merely the broken fragments of his bosom. & # 8220 ; Yet nil can to nil autumn, / Nor any topographic point be empty rather, /Therefore I think my chest hath all/ Those pieces still, & # 8221 ; ( l. 25-28 ) Donne says that there is nil that can mend a broken bosom. He feels the fragments represent the 100s of loves that he will come in contact with but will fall short of his first love. ( Those pieces still, though they non be unite ; / And now as broken spectacless show/ A hundred lesser faces, so/My shreds of bosom can wish, wish, and adore, But after one such love, can love no more. & # 8221 ; ( L. 28-32 ) Donne says that after being wholly enveloped by love, one time the love is over, one will ne’er be able to love once more. He says that no 1 will of all time compare to a first love, and it is difficult to set back a broken bosom to love once more.
In & # 8220 ; The Broken Heart & # 8221 ; John Donne feels that one time love takes clasp of the bosom, it is damaging to a individual one time that love is vanquished. Once a bosom is broken it can ne’er be fixed if it can be repaired at all to love once more. This parallels his ideas that love can non be gotten over easy from the first stanza. One may be able to fall in love rapidly but it takes more than an hr to acquire over being in love. Because love is so powerful once it takes clasp of the bosom, it is hard to let go of oneself from its appreciation. If one is able to let go of himself from the custodies of love, his bosom may be so lacerate and broken, that it is better to ne’er hold loved at all.
