The Name Controversy in The Shipwright
There are many cases in Ken Mitchell s play The Shipbuilder, where the chief character Jaanus Karkulainen, insists on being called by his Finnish name Karkulainen. In the drama, many characters call him Johnny Crook. This state of affairs creates controversy about names and shows how of import names are to some people. Jaanus and Jukka create most of this contention.
Jaanus and Jukka are brothers who are born in Finland. Jukka move s out of Finland and he becomes a Canadian, in name, in organic structure and in psyche. Jaanus relocates to Canada several old ages subsequently, but he s different. When Jaanus moves to Canada he doesn t go a Canadian. He is a Finn life in Canada. His organic structure is in Canada but his name, and his psyche still belong to Finland. When Jaanus foremost enters the drama he insists that his name is Karkulainen. im how he will plead to all of his charges, and calls him Johhny Crook, non Jaanus Karkulainen. To provide his instance, all that Jaanus answers is I am Jaanus Karkulainen. He wouldn t give up his heritage for anything.
One scene subsequently, after two old ages apart, Jaanus and Bender reunite. Bender is a friend of Jaanus who met Jaanus when he foremost came to Canada.
