Social Hierarchy is of import in little towns such as Maycomb. Alabama in To Kill A Mockingbird. In small towns you tend to cognize most of the people that live at that place. and more about them. There are besides more secrets and rumours. and some enigmas. like the Radley’s. The occupants in the town may be more cautious about what they say and do because they are insecure. and more people know them. Most people may cognize the societal categories in the town. and where they are on the ladder. From the top of the ladder to the underside. the societal hierarchy for the characters would be Scout Finch. Walter Cunningham. Little Chuck Little. Burris Ewell. Miss Caroline Fisher. and Calpurnia.

At the top of the societal construction in the novel are the white work forces. One of them as which is Atticus Finch. and Scout Finch being is his girl makes her above the remainder. Walter Cunningham is below them. Even though he is a difficult worker. he is unable to afford anything. and is considered white rubbish. He is a husbandman. his place is above the African Americans and the Ewells. Just because they were white trash didn’t mean they weren’t ever bad people. He is so hapless he has to pay Atticus Finch for his work in gifts such as nutrient. “They ne’er took anything off of anybody. they get along on what they have. ” ( Lee 20 )

Small Chuck Little and Burris Ewell are following to each other in the societal ladder. but Small Chuck Little is on top. This is because the Ewells are the lowest of the low amongst the Whites in Maycomb. they are besides called white rubbish. Burris Ewell is besides soiled. and he can be disrespected by others for that. like when Miss Caroline found the body louse in his hair. “I was merely walking by when it crawled out of his hair…just crawled out of his hair. ” ( 26 ) Burris Ewell’s pa is lazy and a rummy. and wasn’t respectful of other people. Peoples don’t truly similar Burris Ewell. or his pa. Bob Ewell got his household and himself a bad repute. because that’s what he chose. he reinforced their bad repute. which shows that he doesn’t attention for his kids.

Miss Caroline Fisher and Calpurnia are both working adult females. The lone ground Calpurnia is lower on the societal construction is merely because she is black. She has all of the qualities of a southern adult females. she has good manners. and she is respected by the Finch household. She would be in the same societal category as Atticus if she wasn’t black. Miss Caroline was non at the top of the ladder. but she wasn’t below Calpurnia. She was in the center.

The societal hierarchy in To kill a Mockingbird is based on race and wealth. and on occasion respect. But the regard comes from race and wealth. If you are white and affluent you are high on the societal construction. If you are black. you are instantly at the underside of the societal ladder. Even though most of the people are hapless. some are still higher up so others when it comes to societal hierarchy.
