The Power of Fate

Fate, a term which seems to look every so frequently in the mundane universe, can be a powerful force when covering with the predestination of events. Whether in the yesteryear, nowadays or hereafter, destiny can alter how things were, or are supposed to be. As William Jennings Byran, a celebrated military colonel, one time said, & # 8220 ; Destiny is non a affair of opportunity, it is non a affair of pick ; it is non a thing to be waited for, it is a thing which is to happen. & # 8221 ; Fate can non be altered and is something which must go on to everyone and everything.

As is the instance with Thomas Hardy & # 8217 ; s novel, Return of the Native. Without the component of destiny, the secret plan of Return of the Native would hold drastically changed because most of the events included in the secret plan would non hold taken topographic point. Every occurrence in the novel was of import in adding to the secret plan and holding its ain significance, which made the fresh the great narrative which it was and still is. Whether it was the deceases of Mrs. Yoebright, Eustacia, and Damon, or the other important parts included in the secret plan, destiny was ground for every one of them happening.

The secret plan to the novel begins about the clip Eustacia discovers that Clym Yoebright is returning to the countryside. Since Clym was a diamond merchandiser, Eustacia believed that he could acquire her out of the Heath, Eustacia & # 8217 ; s place and the really topographic point she wants to fly. Believing that Damon, the adult male she is holding a relationship with, would non be able to carry through this undertaking for her, she turns to Clym. The individual who can really good be her ticket out of her fatherland. Since this was meant to go on for Eustacia, it was her destiny for Clym to return to the Moors. By this occurrence, it creates the struggle between Mrs. Yoebright and her boy Clym. When Clym begins to pass most of his clip with Eustacia, his female parent gets covetous and gives him an ultimatum of taking between her and Eustacia. With him non doing a determination, Mrs. Yoebright tells her boy to discontinue life in the same family as her. With destiny get downing this struggle, when Clym came back place to the Moors, the same ground was to fault for the separation between the two characters. The ground being is that none of the characters could hold prevented this from go oning, merely because it was meant to be. With all these things go oning, they set the destiny for the three characters which die because of the inalterable events which cause them to happen.

First, the decease of Mrs. Yoebright was a direct consequence of Fate because of how it came to Mrs. Yoebright trying the walk to her boy & # 8217 ; s place to do damagess with him. Before this could go on, there had to be a twine of events which made it her destiny that she dies. These events began with the gaming of the heritage money that Mrs. Yoebright gave to Christien to present to Clym and his cousin. The ground for her making that was to seek to acquire Clym to forgive her for throwing him out of her place, but of class, as the expression goes, & # 8220 ; what might travel incorrect, can and will. & # 8221 ; On the manner to present the money, Christien runs into a group edge for gaming, where he enters a lottery and wins. This encourages Christien to wager the heritage with Damon Wildeve, since he believes that he will travel on a lucky winning run. After winning the money from Christien, Damon is challenged by Diggory Venn, who in bend, wins the money from Wildeve. Fate takes a clasp of Mrs. Yoebright,

when she doesn’t hear from her boy after believing that he had received the money. The ground for her traveling to see Clym. But when cipher answers the door and she leaves defeated to do the long walk back place, when she swoons and dies of an Adder bite. Mrs. Yoebright could non hold done anything to alter what happened to her, because it merely was supposed to go on the manner it did. With the decease of Mrs. Yoebright, it was Eustacia and Damon’s turns to be engulfed by Fate, doing both of their deceases. This occurs from the point of when Eustacia is upset at herself for most likeliness, doing the decease of Mrs. Yoebright by non leting her in the house, because she had Damon over.

To seek to comfort herself, Eustacia decides to travel to a dance where she meets up with Damon and finds out about his freshly acquired wealth. This rekindles Eustacia & # 8217 ; s involvement in Wildeve and she believes that he can now acquire her out of her fatherland by inquiring him to take her to Paris. At this point their destinies are already set, for they both have no thought of what awaits them from this determination. When they attempt to runaway together the following dark, Clym and Damon & # 8217 ; s married woman, Thomasin, attempt to turn up them among the Heath. But when Clym finds Damon waiting for Eustacia, the codas to their destinies occur when Eustacia falls into the river, because it is when the flood tide to the fresh occurs every bit good. When Clym and Damon leap into the H2O to salvage Eustacia from submerging, Damon dies along with Eustacia in the deliverance attempt. Luckily for Clym, Fate had it that Diggory Venn was around when they jumped, because if he wasn & # 8217 ; T, Clym would hold non been rescued by him and most probably would hold perished along with Eustacia and Damon. From the beginning of the novel, Eustacia and Damon were bound to either unrecorded or decease together, but since both of those things can non co-occur with each other, merely one could predominate in the presence of Fate. Since decease was their concluding result, it left a few more things to be decided by Fate, such as the matrimony of Thomasin and Diggory, which would non hold occurred had Damon survived the leap into the river.

With Damon gone, and Thomasin left entirely, Diggory takes the opportunity to re-start the relationship with her, which they one time had in the yesteryear. With both of them at one clip holding a relationship with one another, and so separating ways for a long clip, it was merely the work of Fate that brought them back together one time once more. Author Henry Miller one time said, & # 8220 ; every adult male has his ain fate: the lone jussive mood is to follow it, to accept it, no affair where it leads him. & # 8221 ; A good reading of what happened with the characters of Thomasin and Damon, because even though they believed that their clip together had ended, Fate proved them incorrect by reuniting them in the terminal.

As the most celebrated dramatist of all clip, William Shakespeare said, & # 8220 ; it is non in the stars to keep our fate, but in ourselves. & # 8221 ; Destiny, or Fate, is something which is predetermined and can non and will non of all time, by any individual or thing. As for the characters in Return of the Native, their destinies were something that they had no control over, and even though some of them benefited, and others didn & # 8217 ; T, it was the lone manner which things could hold happened for each and every one of them. It is apparent that the secret plan would non hold taken topographic point the same without the presence of Fate, since the full narrative is based on events which occurred because of this unusual force.
