On January 7, 1891, Zora Neale Hurston was born in the bantam town of Notasulga, Alabama. She was the fifth of eight kids in the Hurston family. Her male parent John was a carpenter, sharecrop farmer, and a Baptist sermonizer ; and her female parent Lucy, a former school teacher.
