The Essence of Humanity

What makes us human? What underlying characteristic differentiates worlds from animate beings or Supreme beings? Where does the kernel of humanity prevarication?

Initially the reply may look simple. One might state when comparing animate beings to worlds that they are cruder than worlds ; they live their life by inherent aptitude, they don & # 8217 ; t love, they don & # 8217 ; t strive to educate themselves and each other & # 8211 ; their paramount end is to last and do it through the twenty-four hours. Yet, human history and the scientific grounds following our human lineage back to some ape-like predecessor proves that worlds ( good, their ascendants ) most likely lived that same being & # 8211 ; scavenging for nutrient and looking for a safe and warm topographic point to kip & # 8211 ; subsistence. Hence, it must be something else that separates us from the animate beings.

The instance contrasting Supreme beings and worlds is a more hard one. There are the eternal statements for Gods & # 8217 ; immortality and omnipotence as the ground worlds and Supreme beings are non one. But, unlike animate beings Gods & # 8217 ; behavior can non be observed by first manus history, one either believes or doesn & # 8217 ; t believe in them. For the intent of statement and to show the most factual stuff possible Gods, in this paper, will be viewed as a human creative activity, an ideal to draw a bead on to -immortality, flawlessness, power ; all qualities worlds admire. Look at the Grecian Gods, they all had human signifiers and were supposed to hold been really beautiful, to a human a God symbolizes flawlessness something all worlds what to accomplish. It was when worlds started to accumulate together, the first marks of society, that the thought of Gods foremost arose, hence it is our society, our relationship with each other that makes us human. Of class there are many other features that are considered human traits, like love, religion, our compulsion with clip, but these are by-products of society.

Society is the key to our humanity. Looking back in history 1,500 old ages before Homer

, in societies we might see crude and rough compared to our ain, there we find the same human features we find in ourselves today – lecherousness, power hungriness, love, religion, fright of decease, wonder – all by-products of the relationship between worlds and society. The Epic of Gilgamesh which gives us a glance into that society and it’s people emphasizes the thought that society is the kernel of humanity. For illustration, there is a character in the narrative that has lived in the wilderness for his full being, Enkidu. He is described as being “ inexperienced person of world ; he knew nil of the cultivated land, ” in other words society. ( Epic 63 ) Enkidu lives merely like an animate being until a Shepard male child brings him a prostitute that seduces him. After that he finds it impossible to return to the wilderness. He is taken in by society, given nutrient and apparels, bathed and oiled – “Enkidu had become a man.” ( Epic 65 ) It wasn’t until Enkidu joined society that he started to develop human features.

Gilgamesh, the hero of the narrative, is the perfect illustration of the thought of worlds desiring to suit the construct of a God. First, Gilgamesh is 2/3 God and 1/3 homo which in itself shows that worlds want their heros to be like Gods. Second, Gilgamesh & # 8217 ; s pursuit is to accomplish immortality. & # 8220 ; I have non established my name in the topographic point where the names of celebrated work forces are written, yet I will raise a memorial to the Gods. & # 8221 ; ( Epic 70 ) Gilgamesh is a perfect illustration of a human wanting to make that ideal degree.

Therefore, humanity is a consequence of the creative activity of society. What prompted worlds to organize these organized groups? We have yet to cognize. But it is this organized system of relationships that separate adult male from animal, and it is that same society that incited the thought of Gods. The necessity for account ( another human trait ) required the construct of a God to explicate the wherefore and hows of the univerese. It is someplace in between God and beast that humanity lies, and this happy medium was a & # 8220 ; merchandise of society. & # 8221 ;
