Oedipus and Hamlet are two really good known characters in literature. They both stand out in a reader & # 8217 ; s mind through their actions, struggles, strengths, and failings. A reader becomes involved more in the action through these two characters. They allow us, the reader, to derive a greater sense of the narratives secret plan. In many ways these characters hold similar traits to one another but the 1 that stands out most in my head is their relationships with their male parents. Their male parent & # 8217 ; s anterior struggles and determinations influenced these characters to the point of their ain death.

In Hamlet Prince of Denmark immature Hamlet is left confronting the results of the struggle his male parent had with his brother. Old Hamlet is dead, killed by his ain brother for the thrown of Denmark. Young Hamlet is in deep forenoon over the loss of his male parent and now he has to manage the remarriage of his female parent to his ain uncle, the adult male who in cold blood killed his male parent. Hamlet, with the decease of his male parent, is moving queerly but his whole mentality alterations for the worst when his male parent & # 8217 ; s ghost visits him. He finds out the true causes of his decease and he is influenced by his male parent to seek retaliation. Hamlet & # 8217 ; s male parent tells his boy to kill his uncle, Claudius because he is the cause of his decease. Hamlet loved his male parent deeply and would make anything for him. He becomes enraged with choler and hatred for Claudius and begins to plot his retaliation, Claudius & # 8217 ; ain decease. Throughout the drama his male parent & # 8217 ; s ghost visits Hamlet. Even after his decease he has a great control over his boy and his actions. These visits are a changeless reminder to Hamlet of the truth. Knowing the truth of his male parent & # 8217 ; s decease has driven Hamlet to the threshold of insanity. The lone thing he can believe of is retaliation. His male parent & # 8217 ; s decease and anterior struggle with his brother has left Hamlet in a place of honouring his male parent and making right by him, and the lone thing he sees fit to make is free himself of the adult male that brought about the choler Hamlet is experiencing. In the terminal Hamlet eventually gets the retaliation he sought with the decease of Claudius. Unfortunately, the retaliation he sought corrupted the full palace. With the decease of Claudius came the decease of others, including immature Hamlet himself. His hatred and choler, that was brought on by his male parent & # 8217 ; s struggles, decease, and ain wants brought about the death of his ain boy. It led Hamlet to the point of insanity, to the point of no turning

back because he had to carry through his father’s last desire.

In Oedipus the King, Oedipus ne’er had a relationship with his biological male parent, but from the clip of his birth he was destined to ever hold a connexion to him. It was phophetetcized by the prophet of Delphi that the boy of Laius and Jocasta, male monarch and queen of Thebes, would kill his male parent and get married his female parent. Oedipus was born and out of fright his male parent ordered his decease. He was taken to be killed but alternatively the shepherd hired to go forth Oedipus bounded by his pess on top of a mountain gave him to a male monarch and queen in Corinith, who were unable to hold kids. Here is where the struggle begins ; Oedipus is raised ne’er cognizing the truth of his birth or of his prophet. He believes that Polybus and Merope are his parents. Old ages base on balls and Oedipus is populating merrily in Corinith until he goes to the Oracle of Delphi and receives a prognostication that he will kill his male parent and get married his female parent. He is dismayed by this, and flees Corinith because he loves Ploybus and Merope so much and does non desire to make any injury to them. He flees to Thebes, his place of birth, ne’er cognizing that the actions he is about to commit are precisely what the prophet phrophetcized. He walks into his ain death because he ne’er knew the truth. The prophet becomes world when he kills Lauis upon come ining Thebes and he subsequently marries Jocasta, his female parent, ne’er cognizing all along that the actions of his male parent and his deathless love for the adult male he believes to be his male parent will take to his ain death. Oedipus leads his life blind, ne’er cognizing the truth of the corruptness that has been brought upon him. Unlike Hamlet, ne’er cognizing the truth and so holding it all of a sudden revealed brings Oedipus to indicate of insanity. He killed his male parent, married his female parent, bore his ain sisters, and left a metropolis in devastation ; all of this because of the determinations and actions of his male parent.

Oedipus and Hamlet are two well-known tragic heroes in literature because of their character traits. Each one is strong and intelligent yet they both, under the influence of their male parents, end their life in decease and wretchedness over the facts and truths that both discover. These two characters were left to endure for their male parent & # 8217 ; s determinations. Their strong power over their boies, no affair if it was direct as in Hamlet, or indirect as seen in Oedipus, finally pervert their lives and the lives of the people Hamlet and Oedipus love.
