Othello Essay

Each person has a different sentiment on what love is, but it is astonishing how these sentiments differ between Desdemona and Emilia in William Shakespeare s, Othello. Othello is a drama written about love, treachery and relationships, and each character has a strong sentiment on how a relationship should be. Although they all have different sentiments, the one s of Desdemona and Emilia seem to be the most interesting every bit good as the complete antonyms of each other. Both married, they have wholly different criterions for their hubbies and one would be surprised to hear their definitions on love. It is flooring to see that matrimony to one individual is strictly physical attractive force, while another thinks of matrimony as the most sacred bond. It is really interesting to see what a broad spectrum of sentiments people have on love.

Unlike most adult females, Emilia thinks of love in a souly physical manner. Typically, work forces normally are the 1s to hold these sentiments of adult female, yet Emilia really strongly feels that every bit long as she is physically satisfied, that is all she needs. She doesn t expression for emotional support in a adult male ; Emilia tends to look to other adult female for that sort of support. In Emilia s sentiment, work forces are useless for anything other than sex. Let hubbies cognize their married womans have sense like them, they see, and odor, and have their roof of the mouths both for Sweet and rancid as hubbies have. ( 4,3,92 ) Out of this quote one can see that she believes that sex is all work forces want from adult female as will. She believes that sex is the lone thing a adult male and a adult female owe to one another and everything else can be dealt with by person of the same sex. Emilia has some really interesting positions on love as appose to Desdemona who has a much more meaningful sentiment of love and the importance of it.

In Othello, the character

of Desdemona is really devoted to her hubby. She feels that love is a really deep emotion between two people. Like Emilia Desdemona does experience that the physical facet of love is of import, yet she feels that to be wholly in love there is a much stronger and deeper connexion. Wholly devoted to her hubby, she defends him even while impeaching her of being unfaithful. In Desdemona s position she feels that complete and entire devotedness is the lone manner to demo her love for here hubby. I do perceive here a divided responsibility. To you I am bound for life and instruction, my life and instruction both do larn me how to esteem you. ( 1,3,179 ) Desdemona doesn t merely take love earnestly, she takes it to such a great extent that she is willing to decease for the 1s she loves. Not merely do the two woman’s ideas on love differ, but their ideas on work forces in general besides are rather different.

There is no better manner to depict Emilia s view on work forces other than to state work forces are hogs! She has perfectly no regard for work forces, as does she experience that work forces feel the same manner about adult female. It seems as if she has atrocious experiences with work forces in her yesteryear, for she is ever really acrimonious while speech production of them. Tis non a twelvemonth or two shows us a adult male. They are all but tummies, and we all but nutrient ; they eat us ravenously, and when they are full, they belch us. Not one time in the drama does she demo some existent regard for a adult male. She doesn Ts believe they are deserving being respected. Once once more Desdemona s sentiment on the subject of work forces has a really different response.

Through Desdemona s eyes work forces are above adult female and merit to be treated with the up most regard. She will allow work forces walk all over her and ne’er speak back to them. To her she is lucky to be married to a adult male, while Emilia doesn t even attention. She was brought up believing that work forces over power adult female and that that s the manner it should be.
