Brave New World

In the book Brave New World Huxley expresses how the old universe and the new universe can non be together. He shows how in his vision of the new universe the old ways were seen as crude and in many instances grotesque. These old ways are reasonably much our modern twenty-four hours beliefs such as monogamousnesss and matrimony and other Christian ethical motives. The character John, the barbarian, represented these old ways and yet showed a nexus between himself and the new universe through his female parent Linda. John is shown as an castaway in both societies, in the old universe because his female parent had taught him new universe beliefs and besides he looked different. He was non accepted in the new universe because he had obvious old universe beliefs and ethical motives some of which he had brought out of Shakespearian literature, so they were foreign to both the barbarians and the civilized. When John meets Bernard and tells him of his and Linda & # 8217 ; s lives on the reserve much of their rejection from the reserve comes to light. It seemingly started with Linda holding dealingss with many of the native work forces and so being beaten by native adult females for making so. This is one ground for John & # 8217 ; s disfavor of his female parent and shows one of the stronger struggles between the old and new universes. Another clip where the struggle of promiscuousness comes up is between John and Lenina who tries to hold dealingss with John. Though John is attracted is to her he purely believes that matrimony must come before sex and when he eventually gets the nervus up to propose such a proposition to Lenina she is aghast and laughs at the thought.

When John and Linda are brought back to London John becomes a freak show exhibit in a manner. He is a rareness and Bernard uses him as a shield so that he can eventually province is political sentiments, which are extremely unpopular, without get

ting in problem. Linda holding entree to soma one time once more takes big sums and dies from an overdose. Her physician knew that such big usage of haoma would kill her but didn’t attention because she had no topographic point in society, she no longer had a occupation and was no longer beautiful so was therefor unimportant. John on the other manus felt great hurting at his mother’s decease. At the infirmary he while at his mother’s bedside he is bothered by some kids traveling through desensitisation to decease and lashes out striking one. He is the lone 1 in the new universe that views decease as saddening and therefor has problem accepting the apathetic attitudes of the others. His force shows the defeat and choler this caused and supports my belief that Huxley was seeking to demo that the new universe could non coexist with the old universe.

Another state of affairs that shows a drastic difference between the two universes is when John is being shown the conditioning of kids and sees them express joying at a picture of a sacred rite that contains self-flagellation. John is shocked at this because he grew up cognizing this as a really of import and well-thought-of rite. This shows the reader a sort of sarcasm because throughout the book we see that they have made up a new type of faith that to us seems pathetic and now they show them express joying at an old faith.

In the terminal the inhumaneness and emotional nothingness in the new universe are excessively much for him, all of these differences between the barbarian and the civilised civilizations particularly the rejection from Lenina end up doing John to hang himself. I feel that in the terminal of this book John represents a combination of both universes, his ideas, beliefs, and emotions all were assorted. This mixture in the terminal caused him to kill himself and in making so shows us the incapableness of the barbarian universe and the Brave New World.
