Of spotted hawks and wild Geese

& # 8220 ; I stop someplace waiting for you. & # 8221 ; Walt Whitman & # 8217 ; s poem ends with this apparently unswerving line.

The whole verse form itself speaks of the character & # 8217 ; s brush with a patched hawk, through whose statements we find both profound and simple significances. Profound in the sense that it speaks of state of affairss where one is & # 8216 ; untranslatable. & # 8217 ; Simple in the sense that mundane things like soil and grass, are used as the objects of symbolism.

& # 8220 ; I excessively am non a spot tamed & # 8230 ; I excessively am untranslatable. & # 8221 ; This is the start of the hawk & # 8217 ; s declarations, saying the similarities between the character and himself ( the hawk ) . The absence of citations would do it look as if all lines come from the character. But reread the verse form, and one finds that so it is the hawk speech production. By & # 8220 ; non a spot tamed & # 8221 ; and & # 8220 ; untranslatable, & # 8221 ; the hawk means partly wild and rather unintelligible. Both the hawk and the character hence possess these said qualities.

The following few lines speak of this being wild, the apparently untranslatable actions that the hawk does. From & # 8220 ; sounding barbarian yawps & # 8221 ; to & # 8220 ; willing [ one ‘s self ] to the soil, & # 8221 ; the lines speak of being wild and wild. Though there are no statements that relate these actions to that of a human, we see the image of rites that signify bestiality. But more than merely bestiality, these lines convey the images of being one with wilderness and nature ; being in sync with the flow of things.

& # 8220 ; You will barely cognize who I am or what I mean, & # 8221 ; says the patched hawk. This statement complements the & # 8216 ; untranslatable-ness & # 8217 ; that the hawk speaks of in the first few lines. Unintelligible and vague, that is what the hawk declares him, and the character, to be.

& # 8220 ; Failing to bring me at first, maintain encouraged, & # 8221 ; the patched hawk proclaims. He now says that it takes more than one attempt to happen him, in his savageness and abandon. One needs to seek several times, non to give up so easy. The hunt for the & # 8216 ; wild side & # 8217 ; of one & # 8217 ; s self, the symbolism of the patched hawk, requires forbearance. & # 8220 ; Keep encouraged, & # 8221 ; he says. Though there is no direct ground why the character has to seek and to happen this patched hawk, the line progresses to & # 8220 ; losing me one topographic point, hunt field-grade officer

R another.” There is the suggestion of continuity, as with the first line of this stanza.

Now the last line gives ground and significance to why the character has to seek, has to happen. & # 8220 ; I stop someplace waiting for you. & # 8221 ; Why does the character have to seek for the patched hawk, in all its abandon and savageness? The last line replies this inquiry. Because it is at that place, waiting, waiting to be found.

Like the ground mountain climbers give to warrant their mounting of mountains, the ground why the character must endeavor to happen the patched hawk is & # 8216 ; because it is there. & # 8221 ; Because it exists, because it waits, that is why it must be found.

The line this writer has chosen, & # 8220 ; I stop someplace waiting for you, & # 8221 ; is the entirety of the whole verse form. All the predating lines speak of the animal-ness of the hawk, which is said to be present in the character, and in everyone. & # 8220 ; I excessively an non a spot tamed & # 8230 ; & # 8221 ; and the other lines follow, depicting how it is to be wild, untranslatable. And where is all this wild life, this apparently unintelligible intent? It lies someplace, bing. It has stopped someplace, waiting.

In the verse form & # 8220 ; Wild Geese, & # 8221 ; the manner of the universe is disclosed. & # 8220 ; Meanwhile the universe goes on. & # 8221 ; The universe, and its gesture, continues, unaffected by one & # 8217 ; s feelings. Nature takes its class even if you are good, or evil. & # 8220 ; You do non hold to walk on your articulatio genuss for a 100 stat mis through the desert, atoning. You merely have to allow the soft animate being of your organic structure love what it loves. & # 8221 ;

This is where we see the point of happening the spotted hawk interior of us. To be at peace with one & # 8217 ; s self, one has to be free. One has to give up to the animate being, to the barbarian. Because the universe is there to be seen and to be felt, go oning its irreversible way to tomorrow, following the strategy of things. & # 8220 ; The universe goes on & # 8230 ; the Sun and the clear pebbles of the rain are traveling across the landscapes, over the prairies and the deep trees, the mountains and the rivers. & # 8221 ; One can be certain that all that should go on will go on, like the heading place of the wild geese. Ever heard of the look & # 8220 ; every bit certain as the Sun will lift? & # 8221 ;

And so, the Sun will lift. One of the may grounds why we have to be at peace with the patched hawk, the barbarian animal, in all of us. It has stopped someplace, waiting.
