Midsummer Nights Dreams Essay, Research Paper
A Midsummer Night? s Dream was written in 16th century England. In 1595, life
was as you can conceive of really different. During this period Queen Elizabeth I was
at the throne. England was a Christian state and people greatly honoured the
queen. Shakespeare was Elizabeth I? s poet laureate, so his work was extremely
valued across England. Women were treated as second-class citizens. In lower
category households, misss were non normally educated. They were expected to make
domestic occupations and expression after kids. In the upper category places things were
different. Girls were educated but they did non hold free sentiment. Womans did non
hold any rights ; they had no pick in what they did with their lives or whom
they married. The male parent of the miss would take a suer for her ( normally
being the wealthiest adult male available ) and she was expected to get married him. In
theater, work forces would play the portion of adult females. The Elizabethans strongly believed in
the supernatural. Few facets of 16th century life were non affected by the
belief of witchery. Fairies and magicians as being existent. Magic was non as we
see it today ; things that immature kids believe, but as compelling and existent.
Their beliefs in God were really much related to those of enchantresss and devils. If
you had sinned, people believed you had the Satan in you. In a Summer solstice
Night? s Dream, different secret plans are linked to organize a amusing drama based around
thaumaturgy and love. The drama is set in an enrapturing wood amongst the paigles ;
concealed deep in the wood is the fairy land. I personally think that
Shakespeare was really clever in how he devised? A Midsummer Night? s Dream, ?
as he has three really good elements of amusement ; love, charming and comedy
represented with different narratives and characters. The Lovers represent the
effects and powers of love. Hermia is prepared to give her life up for the adult male
she loves. In a manner, Shakespeare has adopted a modern position of things, as
Hermia? s character is non one of a? typical? Elizabethan adult female. She is a
fiery immature lady, determined to be with the adult male she loves. Lysander and Hermia
hold a good, strong relationship. Helena dotes upon Demetrius, but her
? love? is non existent love, like Hermia? s, it is more of an enamored love.
This contrast of being in existent love and being blinded by love, really much makes
you think and if you were in a relationship you would believe twice about your
feelings after watching the drama. The Workmans are all really simple characters,
named harmonizing to their personality. They have been implanted in the drama to
add temper and some blithe amusement from the more serious issues
within the drama. Bottom, in peculiar, is used to do merriment and play. The
faeries make the drama charming and exciting ; Puck is a arch, cunning immature
faery that likes to play fast ones on persons. Some of his addresss contain
repeat for illustration: 396 Robin goodfellow: ? Up and down, up and down, I will take them
up and down. I am fear? vitamin D in field and town ; Goblin, lead them up and
down? ? Repeat has made this address into a song/chant ; this makes the
address? charming? and? merriment? . The usage of satiety and rime by Puck at
the terminal of this scene is used to make a poetic state atmosphere. In which
the natural universe is described good. The faery scenes are really entertaining. The
linguistic communication is in the manner, Titania? s ironical words to bottom. 144 Titanium dioxide:
? Thou art
every bit wise as thou art beautiful. ? It is dry that Titania is
stating this, because Bottom is clearly nil close to beautiful. There is
sense of suspense nowadays in Act 3, Scene 1. Titania is asleep on the phase, the
individual she first sets her eyes upon when she awakens will be the one she falls
in love with. On the phase are the workingmans. This suspense makes the drama
exciting. The lovers are really much more involved in the dramatic side of the
production, with their statements, Shakespeare uses initial rhyme to make a
dreamy, romantic, charming ambiance. For case: 435 Hermia: ? And slumber,
that sometimes shuts up sorrow? s oculus, Steal me awhile from mine ain company?
The usage of initial rhyme emphasises what Hermia is speaking about, doing her
words more memorable. The secret plan is really clever, although it relies on
happenstance. The faeries? costumes would hold been dramatic and dazzling.
The workingmans would be dressed in shreds and the lovers and tribunal in really smart,
rich garments. The drama begins as a calamity and becomes amusing. Act 3, Scene 2
Begins to be amusing in which the lovers are speaking in riming pairs. These
are used to do the scene romantic and amusing. Helena thinks that she is being
made a sap of, as both, Lysander and Demetrius appear to be frantically in love with
her. Here is an illustration of this. 169 Lysander: Lysander, maintain thy Hermia ; I will
none: If e? er lov? d her, all that is gone. My bosom to her but every bit but as
guest wise visit? vitamin D, And now to Helen is it place return? vitamin D. The scene
becomes really dramatic when the lovers are disputing. We notice that the comedy
has gone, and go a serious wrangle when the riming pairs no longer
appear. There are many lessons to be learned from A Midsummer Night? s Dream.
Lysander says a line that implies that love can ne’er be perfect. 134 Lysander:
The class of true love ne’er did run smooth ; I believe this is really true, as
there are so many jobs in love. It besides teaches us that? true love? is
of import and you should non seek to tamper with it. Similes have been used in
Act 5, Scene 1 to notice on the drama within the drama. 122 Hippolyta: Played on
his prologue like a kid on a recording equipment 124 Theseus: His address was like a
tangled concatenation. Similes are frequently used to depict public presentations. Hippolyta is
comparing Quinces? prologue to a kid, intending it was non professional, as
the histrions thought it was. Theseus remarks on Quinces? talking accomplishments,
antecedently Quince has said the prologue wholly incorrect. I think the Duke is
basking the drama within the drama, as he has ever seen? professional,
serious public presentations. This is a alone experience for them, less play and more
comedy. I have concluded that the drama was diverting and interesting. My front-runner
address of the drama was Pucks epilogue, it has rhythmic feel to it, and this
makes it the perfect stoping for the drama. The fact that I had antecedently read
the drama in Year 8 familiarized me with characters. When I studied the drama this
clip, we concentrated on different facets of it and took more of an involvement in
the linguistic communication techniques. I am really glad that I read this work of Shakespeare
once more, as I do non believe I have truly appreciated his works up until now. An
apprehension of how life was like in the sixteenth centaury is rather critical to
identify with the drama. I am happy that our chosen Shakespeare piece was A
Midsummer Nights Dream, as it is really entertaining.
