In the book The Bridge of San Luis Rey, Brother Juniper witnesses the prostration of the San Luis Rey Bridge and the deceases of the five people who were on the span when it fell. This disturbs Brother Juniper greatly. He wonders if God intended this, or if it was simply a happenstance. In order to happen out if it is happenstance or non, he additions as much information as possible on the five people who fell to their deceases on the span. He feels that if he can do a connexion between all these people so he can calculate out why God made this happen to them out of everyone in the universe.

The five people on the span had several analogues in their lives. The two kids, Don Jaime and Pepita, were both sent off by people who purportedly loved them. Camila sent her boy Don Jaime off because she didn & # 8217 ; t have the money to pay her ex-friend Uncle Pio. So in exchange for the money, Uncle Pio would take Don Jaime to Lima and learn him the ways of society. The Abbess sent Pepita off to populate with Dona Maria, in hopes that Dona Maria would do a part to the orphanhood where Pepita came from. The Abbess knew that Pepita was particular and could one twenty-four hours run the orphanhood, yet she sent her off because she wanted the money.

The three grownups, Dona Maria, Esteban, and Uncle Pio have things in common, besides. They all lost person they loved, but non ever in decease. Dona Maria lost her girl Dona Clara when she married and moved to Spain. Dona Clara resented her female parent and was really ill-mannered to her. Esteban lost his twin brother Manuel, with whom he was highly one hundred fifty

ose, to disease and infection. Uncle Pio lost Camila when she moved up and society and she refused to tie in with him any longer. All three were besides ostracized from society. These grownups had merely begun to acquire over their losingss and be happy when they died.

If it was God & # 8217 ; s purpose to hold these people die, so the lone grounds he would hold would be loss of a loved one, being sent off from the people they loved, or eventually being happy. It seemed as if once these unfortunate people became happy their lives were all of a sudden cut short. Maybe it is God & # 8217 ; s purpose for everyone to happen interior peace on Earth. Once they find that interior peace possibly they are summoned to Heaven.1 & # 8220 ; So he put everything down on the impression that if he reread the book 20 times, the countless facts would all of a sudden get down to travel, to piece and to bewray their secret. & # 8221 ;

This means that Father Juniper ne’er figured out if this calamity was God & # 8217 ; s will or non. One would believe that he did non win in his attempt to perplex out if this was an purpose or a happenstance. No 1 can to the full understand God. As ( page 7 ) says, & # 8220 ; Some will state that we shall ne’er cognize and that to the Gods we are like the flies that the male childs kill on a summer twenty-four hours, and some say, on the contrary, that the really sparrows do non lose a plume that has non been brushed off by the finger of God. & # 8221 ; One might believe that this means we will ne’er cognize if everything happens because of an purpose or strictly happenstance. It is wholly up to each person. Everyone has their ain sentiments and this inquiry can merely be answered when their clip comes.
