The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, is a drama that consisted of many parts. It had lifting action, falling action, and flood tide, along with many other parts important to a good drama. Woven into the play of Shakespeare s love narrative, were the characters of the drama. The chief characters, Romeo and Juliet, took centre phase in about every act. Romeo was the boy of the Montague household and Juliet was the girl of the Capulet household. Because of the struggle between the two households, their love could ne’er be. The households had been feuding for ages. Throughout all of the hurting, love, and enduring brought to the two lovers, there was one character that provided a humourous interruption from all of the emotional calamity. Mercutio, relation of the Prince and friend of Romeo, was this character.

Every one time in a piece Mercutio would add a small comedy to an otherwise tragic drama. Between his ill-famed Queen Mab address, to his dramatic battle scene, he was at that place supplying one humourous minute after another. Even up to his decease he was stating gags. Because he was characterized by his jokes, no 1 believed that he was truly deceasing. The characters eventually stopped jesting about when Mercutio fell down dead and a fatal hole was discovered in his thorax. Mercutio was Shakespeare s one amusing component in a narrative that was non to stop merrily.

Mercutio s Queen Mab address ( Act 1, scene 4 ) was an effort to hearten up Romeo, because he was depressed over his unreciprocated love for Rosaline, the miss he wanted before he met Juliet. In this address Mercutio tells about Queen Mab, and makes a mention to the ability of faeries to command the personal businesss of worlds. & # 8220 ; And in this province she gallops dark by night/Through lovers & # 8217 ; encephalons, and so they dream of love. & # 8221 ; Mab had the ability to command the dreams of persons. Control of human personal businesss was an of import subject of Romeo and Juliet. Mercutio used concealed significances in many of the things he did. This narrative of control was a good illustration. In The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, barely any of the characters had any control of their life. Mercutio used this address to Mab as a metaphor for life. In many Renaissance plays the characters believed the Gods and other higher powers controlled their lives, much like Queen Mab controlled their dreams.

Soon after this address Romeo, convinced by his friends, decided to at

be given the Capulet party. Romeo and twosome of Romeo s friends attended the Capulet dance. This is where he run into and fell in love with Juliet. He shortly forgot about Rosaline and the love that he had for her. Mercutio did no understand nor agree with this new found love for Juliet. He believed that it was foolish for Romeo to fall in love so fast. If love be blind, love can non hit the grade. ( 2.1.35 ) This love was non meant to be. It caused more jobs and led to a celebrated battle scene between Tybalt and Mercutio, in which Mercutio dies.

This celebrated portion in which Mercutio played a major function was the fight scene between him and Tybalt. The phrase, its all merriment and games until person gets hurt, rang true. While the battle progressed the characters continuously threw abuses back and 4th at one another. While Romeo tried to interrupt up the battle, Mercutio was stabbed under his arm. Even during his last minutes he made gags, even about his ain decease. No, tis non so deep as a well, nor so broad as a church door, but tis plenty, twill function. Ask for me tomorrow, and you shall happen me a sedate adult male. In this scene there is even the usage of prefiguration. A pestilence o both your houses! They have made worms meat of me. I have it, And soundly, excessively. Your houses! This statement proved to be true in the terminal with the deceases of both Romeo and Juliet.

Due to Romeo s great friendly relationship with Mercutio he sought out Tybalt in retribution for Mercutios decease. Romeo described Mercutio as, A gentleman, that loves to here himself talk and will talk more in a minute than he will stand in a month. This was really true, but in the terminal he could non state plenty.

An of import thing to see in this drama was how it would hold appealed to Shakespeare s audiences if it had lacked Mercutio s presence. This drama would be wholly otherwise had Mercutio non been written in as a character. Without his joyful mentality and poetic, clever and humourous gags, this drama would hold lacked comedy. This would go forth the drama a dry calamity that would make nil but deject the audience. Shakespeare, nevertheless, was able to blend merely the right sum of everything in this drama. He had love, hurting, loss, struggle and wit. If the wit, or more specifically, Mercutio, had non been present a whole facet of this narrative would hold been lost. Mercutio added a batch to this drama and without him it would non hold been about as gratifying.
