Tragic Hero

Throughout Romeo and Juliet the calamity written by William Shakespeare there are illustrations of tragic heroes. There are seven things needed to be a tragic hero, the character has to be of high rank, originally good, in a struggle, flawed, recognize his mistake excessively tardily, become stray, and bring forth a caratharis. The Friar in this drama expresses and shows all of these traits, and hence can be considered a tragic hero.

The Friar is of high rank because he is a priest and a priest at that clip period was considered to be the highest of all. He is besides extremely graded because he was rational and could pass on good with others. The Friar is originally good because he tries to get married Romeo and Juliet to unify the two families but it does non work out. He besides is originally good because at first he does non believe they should hotfoot into things, but he thinks of unifying the families and goes along with the nuptials. Here he shows his good purposes in altering his head about get marrieding Romeo and Juliet when he says,

? O, she knew good

Thy love did read by rote, that could non spell.

But semen, immature vacillator, come go with me.

Inn one regard I? ll thy helper be ;

For this confederation may so be happy prove

To turn you families? resentment to pure love. ? ( II iv 88-93 ) .

The Friar is in a struggle by affecting himself in the whole matrimony of Romeo and Juliet. He has to lie to everyone, which is besides more problem for him if he gets caught. He besides is involved by non stating anyone about the love between Romeo and Juliet before his good purposes turned into a violent stoping. He is besides in a struggle because he does non state the Prince of this and if the Prince finds out the penalty could be deat

Bing contradictory to his ain words reveals the Friar? s defects, by first stating that he would non get married Romeo and Juliet and so making it to unify the households. He is besides impatient in get marrieding them excessively early. He besides should hold taken his ain advice when he says, ? Rebellions from true birth, faltering on maltreatment. Virtue itself turns frailty, being misapplied And frailty sometimes by action dignified. ? ( II iii 20-23 ) . He realizes his mistake excessively tardily because after the deceases of Romeo and Juliet, he realizes that he ne’er should hold married them in the first topographic point and it was incorrect to make it without the consent of the parents. The Friar is isolated from the remainder of the people of Verona because he must maintain the secret of the matrimony otherwise he could be punished badly. He must non talk of this to anyone except Romeo who is banished, the Nurse who was no longer trusted by Juliet so she was non in there with them any longer and Juliet was unconscious in her household vault.

The Friar shows caratharis by doing the audience feel bad for him when he foremost tries to make something good and marries Romeo and Juliet. He besides makes the reader feel bad for him because the reader hopes at the terminal when the Prince of Verona is giving out penalties that he does non give a penalty to the Friar because of his unthreatening Acts of the Apostless throughout the drama. The Prince helps demo the Friar? s hurting by stating? For ne’er was there a narrative of more suffering than this of Juliet and her Romeo. ? ( V iii 309-310 ) .

Therefore the Friar has shown all of the seven traits needed to be a tragic hero and will be considered the tragic hero of this drama. Others who could be considered tragic heroes are Romeo, Benvolio and Juliet.
